Her deadly wolf program

With a disdain for science that alarms wildlife experts, Sarah Palin continues to promote Alaska's policy to gun down wolves from planes.

@pacificaharry

Maybe you should find out what "abhor" means before posting.

re: yanking a fetus

You're right. I would have a problem "yanking a fetus" out of the womb at 7 months. With a vaccum, maybe...

Wow, I really didn't hate her before...

Now, I do.

Think this is

a dreadful practice to shoot any animal from a plane...Goes to judgement--just like putting a child at risk for a 8 hr plane ride after your water breaks...

Shooting from the air

Hell, we shoot people from the air in Iraq and Afghanistan and McCain happily bombed civilians from the air in Vietnam. It's all "sport" to the Republicans. If I could, I'd arm the bears and wolves with SAM's and even things out a bit.

On a deeper level, however, Palin's religious beliefs explain her willingness to shoot wildlife and rape the environment. "Religious" developers in Indiana, when asked about the damage malls and housing developments do to plant and animal life, will seriously tell you they are furthering God's plan to bring on the "end times". No joke.

Longing for end times and the return of Jesus does not spawn long term thinking. It may be interesting to see news stories about death cults a la Jonestown or Heaven's Gate, but how scary is it that religious fundamentalists may place "final reckoning" advocates in the White House? Nothing like nukes to bring Jesus back to earth.

No, pacificaharry, you don't get it

I doubt any pro-choice person would do anything but abhor a physician who gets pleasure from performing an abortion. The question for me isn't whether or not wolf-culling should be illegal. I'm sure there are occasional needs for it, as there can be for women to end their pregnancies. But that doesn't mean anyone should ENJOY it. That's what disgusts many people here about Palin.

Wow!

I just cannot really figure out Mrs. Palin. She is a woman who is against equal pay for women...hmmm. She is pro-life, but is an avid hunter...hmmm. She is all about the family, but is going to neglect the proper raising of her kids (especially the new-born with down syndrome) by being the VP of the United States. Maybe she thinks its not that demanding of a job.

In my opinion, hunting is gross, but I understand that we have to do it to remain part of the food chain. But shooting wolves down from a plane is not hunting. The wolf has no chance of survival, it cannot run or fight back. That is the point of hunting, survival of the fittest, but the wolf could go to 24-hour fitness everyday and still not be fitter than a human in a plane. This is sick! Look at the facts Caribou-Barbi!

Truthiness

"In 2007, she approved $400,000 to educate the public about the ecological success of shooting wolves and bears from the air."

According to the editorial referenced, it was the Alaska legislature that had the idea for a public education program and appropriated the $400,000. The editorial doesn't even mention Palin.

And it's at best misleading to label the wolf hunt as Palin's program. The program came out of the Department of Fish and Game and in most of its details predates her governorship.

As for "...a disdain for science that alarms wildlife experts...."

The article itself quotes a spokesperson for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game: "Several times over the past several years, our science has been challenged in court. In every instance it has prevailed."

And then there is: "Yet it is not hard to find Alaskans who say Palin's enthusiasm for predator control fits a broader narrative of how she edits science to suit her personal views."

Since when is "It is not hard to find people who say...." a valid argument for anything other than that it's not hard to find people who will say just about anything?

Palin may be an enviro-monster, but only a naif would conclude so based on this article.

It's called management, not hunting

Palin doesn't hunt wolves from Airplanes.

Airborne wolf management is just that, a tool to control the population of wolves in certain areas.

It is not a perfect system, but it is better than letting nature take its course. Perhaps we should let nature take its course in other areas as well. For example, why do they control the flow of the Mississippi River with dikes and levees? Why do people hire pest controllers to get rid of bats, rats, and mice?

The Alaska Constitution specifically mandates that government manage the fish and game species on a maximum sustained yield basis. People would rather eat moose and caribou than wolves so they control the population of wolves. They do not exterminate the wolves, they just keep the population down so that the moose and caribou can utilize the habitat.

Wolves can only otherwise be controlled by starvation...that is letting nature take it's cours which results in fewer wolves and fewer moose and caribou.

Alaska would be overjoyed if PETA et al took it upon themselves to live trap the wolves in certain areas and released them in other states. Put them in central park for example, you would certainly control your population of feral cats that way.

We like our wolves, we never want to be without them, but when they reach the levels where the eat over 80% of the moose calves before they are one month old, they need to be controlled.

hunting

Sarah Palin is not my candidate which is why I would implore you to moderate your outrage.

This is something you do not understand about states where people live with deer in their yard - even in the city. Racoons may walk in your house and have fierce fights with your pets. Yes, this does happen. In my case the animal only ate blood pressure medication. They camp in your attic and chimneys. Cayotes are heard at night, and when you set a humane live animal trap to catch them, you may find that you have a rabid angry skunk.

You may want to spend millions of dollars on an environmental impact study, and then hire degreed and certified experts to come in a do the "work" humanely (and inefficiently).

This is just money that you will not have for schools and needed infrastructure like water and sewer.
