I am not a Democrat, but I am liberal. I didn't like everything about Bill Clinton's policies, and was less than pleased with his lying about an affair up until he was caught, but I liked Bill Clinton nonetheless. He had charisma and brains and was obviously a political animal who enjoyed his work and had natural instincts about it. I think Clinton's presidency was a resounding success.
I hate Bush and hope the democrats find a strong candidate. On paper, I would not be against that candidate being Hillary Clinton. I've always found people hatred for her weird, since so much of it seems to stem from nothing in particular, or possibly even an anti-feminist sentiment. That said, this video demonstrates what is wrong with Hillary, and why she shouldn't be the Democratic candidate.
So many things are wrong with this video, it's hard to know where to begin. I don't know what Hillary thinks she's doing, sitting there on a couch, trying to seem all warm and fuzzy, and then saying she wants to "chat" with us. The writing is awful. The camera work is ridiculous -- why does it keep panning back and forth?
Hillary's eyes open too wide when she speaks. She digs in on Bush much more than is necessary in the context of a candidacy announcement and invitation for dialogue. Hillary does not come across as decisive or strong. Instead she comes across as somebody who is trying to appear the way she thinks would make people like her (motherly, warm 'n' fuzzy, or something).
I know Hillary will never see this message, but here goes: Play to whatever your strengths are. Al Gore lost in 2000 because he kept changing his personality in mid-candidacy. People said "he's too stiff" and so he made jokes that flopped. And so on.
Look, if you're an icy bitch, and good at being an icy bitch, then be the icy bitch you were meant to be. If you're a sarcastic know-it-all, then damn, show us your chops! Let the teeth tear in! But most of all, if you are -- as I suspect -- a smart, shrewd tactician, who knows policy, then show us your brains. Be articulate! Don't give us warm fuzzies, respect our intelligence. Even if many Americans don't deserve that respect, respect it anyway. Don't play to the pollsters or the imagined swing voters. Play to your reality as a person. Be yourself! If you have strong principles, then lay them out for us. Show us who you are.
And please spare us the conversations about your favorite movie being "Wizard of Oz" because you wanted to go on an adventure with Dorothy. If you find yourself saying stuff like that, hold back. We don't want to know you that well just yet. We're only on the first date, OK?
This is a perfect example of why so many people hate Hillary Clinton: she sounds totally insincere and condescending. Clearly she's receiving speaking advice from primary school teachers: "Make sure your tone of voice bleeds transparently insincere enthusiasm, like when I tell my preschool class their crayon drawings are 'beautiful!'"
Say what you want about Bill Clinton, but the man could speak, how is it that absolutely none of that skill has rubbed off on his wife? Other than maybe Mitt Romney, I can't think of a less charismatic candidate for 08.
I hope Salon will not become another PR outlet for Hillary. Mainstream media has done a great dis-service for the voters by providing Hillary so much free PR time and space while less known candidates, such as Senator Dodd, Governor Vilsack, etc. almost getting no attention. If the Mainstream media, including Salon, keep doing this, they obviously pre-select a president for the American public.
If Salon decides to support Hillary's candidate, then Salon should make it known to its readers.
Please give other candidates' an equal opportunity. We as voters need to get information about all the candidates in order to make a sound judgment.
Also, does Hillary deserve so much attention? I truly don't think so.
...it would melt.
