CNN's more worldly cousin

An enviable look at what the rest of the world sees on CNN.

Kudos

Kudos to the CNN anchor for pressing the question at hand. But it makes me ill when I hear that woman try to defend Isreal's actions. Reminds me of a certain other administration and their rhetoric.

Speaker sounds American

That's disturbing to me. American rockets destroyed that building. The spokesperson may be Israeli, but she sounds like an American making excuses for Israel.

Enviable Look at What?

Rosemary Church's interview here isn't that "enviable" as you put it. In fact, it's rather shoddy.

First of all, her statement that Israel has the means to simply shoot down Katyusha rockets is totally false. There is a system called THEL, but it has been shelved and is NOT in operation at this time. So Israel does NOT have the capability to magically shoot down Katyushas as Church so erroneously tells her audience.

But what the hell, whoever said reporters need to be accurate? Oh, wait a minute, Salon has. In fact, you routinely rake reporters over the coals for such gaffes. But I guess you just missed this one. Still, it would be nice if you posted an editor's note stating that this particular assertion, one of the backbones of Church’s "enviable" reporting here, is flat out wrong.

Second, Church seems incredulous that Hezbollah would be firing rockets from near a building like the one in Qana. Does she read the newspaper? Maybe the New York Times?

Here's a quote in the July 28th edition of the Times from a Lebanese man from the village of Ain Ebel.

“Hezbollah came to Ain Ebel to shoot its rockets,” said Fayad Hanna Amar, a young Christian man, referring to his village. “They are shooting from between our houses.”

“Please,’’ he added, “write that in your newspaper.”

That's not an Israeli spokesperson saying that, it's a Lebanese man who has seen firsthand the tactics used by Hezbollah. After all, we're not talking about a group of boy scouts here, we're talking about terrorists who use suicide bombers and make no pretense about firing Katyushas -- rockets that have been denounced by Human Rights Watch as indiscriminate terror weapons. So what, I have to ask, is so shocking about believing that Hezbollah would fire its rockets from next to that building or any building, for that matter? The answer: absolutely nothing.

Sadly, Church's reporting in this clip is as poor as anything we'd see coming from FOX News. She gets her facts wrong and shows little objectivity. There's nothing enviable about it.

It was an interview - they were questions, not statements of fact.

Rosemary Church was conducting an interview, not reporting facts, Rob H. She did not report that Israel has the capability of shooting down Katyusha rockets, nor did she state that Hezbollah was not operating from nearby the building in Qana. She was was asking questions. They were challenging questions, as they should have been, and the Israeli spokesperson had plenty of opportunity to explain the Israeli position without interruption from Church. This was a fairly and professionally conducted interview the type of which we could stand to see more of from our journalists.

Hey, Anon23... You're Flat-Out Wrong

Church's allegation about Israel's capability to shoot down Katyushas was a STATEMENT, it was not posed as a question.

Let's take a look at her words referring to the rockets:

"Why would Israel not be trying to shoot them out of the sky?"

That is called a question, I agree. But to back up her question, here's what she says next:

"They have the capability to do that."

That's called a STATEMENT, and like any reporter trying to paint someone into a corner, Church tries to use that STATEMENT to establish the credibility of the question. It's a fairly simple routine. Get answers through the establishment of facts.

Only her fact was wrong. So that question -- combined with that statement -- would lead any person without knowledge of the situation to think that Israel not only has the capability to shoot down Katyushas, but that their failure to do so only illustrates their supposed heavy handed tactics. And that is the tone of the entire piece. But one of her key facts to back up her assertions happens to be blatantly false.

Now you can interpret it any way you like, Anon, but unless you're willing to be totally disingenuous, the fact is she got it totally wrong.

Israel doesn't have the capability to shoot down Katyushas. And any reporter with about 30 seconds and Google could find that out.

Disgusting

After watching this video, I am even more disgusted by Israel's abominable actions. Horrific.

Re: Search YouTube

Search YouTube using this string: war in lebanon, and you'll get a horrifying collection of clips showing what havoc and death the Israelis have wreaked. It's sobering stuff, especially if your "support Israeli" default is set to "auto".

Friday, August 4, 2006 09:56 AM

Search Hezbollah

...and you'll find a bunch of terrorist thugs shooting at civilians, who happen to live in Israel.

Go ahead, lament the death of innocent Lebanese civilians, but give credit to the Hezbollah thugs hiding behind them in cowardice.
