There's nothing worse than singing with someone who's doing a lot of vocal flourishes. Unless you've practiced with them extensively, you don't know what they're going to do. And unless you yourself are a very good singer, there's not much more you can do than to try and get through it as best you can.
Frankly, most people don't pay attention to the lyrics of the songs they hear. They get the sound and the tones, but comprehension requires more attention than most people are willing to give. That's probably why Reagan wanted "Born in the USA" as his campaign song. Heck, you probably could have convinced him to use "Mony, Mony" if he'd never heard a crowd shouting the unofficial refrain.
