I don't know who I love more - Stephen Colbert or Helen Thomas.
This has to be such sweet revenge for Thomas after the way this admnistration has been so disrespectful toward her (though Thomas, the consumate professional, has never acknowledged the disrespect). What a way for her to finally say "Fuck You," in the most respectful of ways, of course.
I bow before you, Stephen and Helen.
Steven Colbert learned one thing from Dick Cheney, he gave Bush both barrels right in the face.
Colbert should get a medal for this. He's got balls as big as Texas. Bush had no insulation, absolutely brilliant. Thank you to Stephen from all of us who have been screaming "fuck Bush!" without a voice in the meda.
Utterly, utterly amazing--free speech still exists in the USA (which I know in my gut consists of 50 states!). Bravo Stephen Colbert, brava Helen Thomas--thanks to both of you for helping keep dissent and patriotism together, where they belong.
Balls, guts, brains, humor, nerve, unafraid, Stephen you got it all. Bravo to Helen. We only read of such courage in history books.
I think the intro makes a little too much about the cool reception that the president and first lady give to Colbert. From the video it just seems like the two of them are making for the door as fast as possible.
The guy is unbelievable, a true comic genius. I can see his popularity and notoriety skyrocket and I hope it just keeps on getting better for him.
I live in Costa Rica and don't get C-Span (not that I would be watching it anyway) so I want to thank Salon and Video Dog for making this video available. It was great to see Stephen Colbert showing contempt for the US mainstream media for all the right reasons: being a spineless, arrogant, and self deluded mouthpiece for the right wing whackos which run the country. There are infinite ways to finding Christ as our savior and I choose Colbert! Is there any way I can get Comedy Central on cable down here? I would gladly pay double...
Stephen and Helen. Priceless!!! Wisewoman
Stephen Colbert will go down in history for this. Absolutely ball-busting, right in that chump of a president's face. And unending kudos to Helen Thomas! Most excellent performances.
I use Firefox, and that might be the issue, as I've noticed lately that embedded videos don't show up in Firefox. I would imagine that Salon has a high percentage of non-IE users, so if this is a browser related issue, you might want to rethink what you are using for embedded video.
Stephen and Helen I have the utmost respect for you. What courage!!!
Given that the performance of Stephen Colbert and Helen Thomas was so fantastic and so brave, I think it is silly of Salon to say that the President and First Lady gave Colbert a "cool reception." I just don't see this, and Bush is too smart (yes, I said it, "smart") for that!
There was no "cool reception." However, that doesn't mean that the video and overall presentation wasn't gutsy and a fantastic slap in the face for a president and a media establishment that deserve to be slapped.
Scathing! I can't believe Colbert had the nerve to do what he did. Good for him. If I were he, I'd be concerned about my safety. He certainly said what many have us have wanted to say but didn't know how or were afraid.
How refreshing to see an American speaking out!
It's what our country is all about and yet we don't really take advantage of this freedom.
Kudos to Mr Colbert and I think that I will start to watch his show.
I am so proud of Stephen Colbert and Helen Thomas!
Bush has gone to great lengths to keep himself away from ANY dissent, criticism or "unhappy talk" throughout his entire term and to withhold, despite our Constitution, as much truth, facts, decisions and information about the actual ongoings and actions of his administration, i.e., OUR NATION, from the American people. In addition, and sadly, the once noble and world-wide respected profession of journalism has allowed itself to be "bought and sold" like any other cheap product on the market by the huge multinational corporate elite, which this administration has invited in with open arms. (And in my opinion, with no small help from the greedy, short-sighted, incompetent, self-serving and disgusting members of Congress - and I regrettably have to include a bunch of cowardly Democrats in that group as well.
My point (sorry to take so long to get to) is that in one fell swoop - the talented, witty, brilliant and VERY courageous Stephen Colbert hit BOTH the lying and dangerous Bush and cronies AND the shameful and cowardly so-called media right smack in their collective faces!!
America may be down, but we're not out as long as we have true patriots such as Stephen fighting on! Thank you.
In the present state of this nation there is a press corp who are terified of speaking out or even reporting on anything other than what is handed to them by the W.H.We now have An American Hero, Steven Colbert who was not afraid to state in front of the nation and G.W. Bush and company the true feelings of the American people excepting those that are too dense to see the reality of the criminal actions of a party gone corrupt. I hope that more people will come forward and speak out. There is a very limited venue where we as citizens can speak out.
Icy exchange? Looked to me as if Senor Colbert cut Le Bush clean when the old codger tried to give him an earful! Same w/ Madame Mrs. President. Now that was some integral reporting!
Thank you Stephen Colbert. You shamed the press corps like I've never seen. Are you working on Michael Moore status?
Dear Editor, thank you for showing the video since some of my friends did not see the dinner on tv. I watched the whole think, and even though I thought that Colbert was very daring, I loved it.
Who else in Washington would dare to tell it like it is? not our Representatives, no our Senators or anyone else. Those that have spoken against this administration as you must know, they have been fired. We have lost many of our liberties under this secret and corrupted administration.I have not supported Bush since the day that he got elected because of Carl Rove fixing of many votes to benefit Bush. Also because of Abramoff, we know how they paid for Bush to be elected. This man is ignorant of the world and can not even speak English correctily in order to talk to the many leaders of other country. He has alienated everyone. I watch Stephen Colbert every noght and he should be our next President.I enjoyed his homor immensely and I feel bad for those that did not laugh or approve. Thanks for listing this Colbert episode on the Salon. Much of the initial coverage about Fort Hood turned out to be wrong. Is there anything wrong with that?
