Colbert's smart bomb

Why attendees at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner panned Colbert.

Uh, the Dartmouth reference is to the character, not the man. Colbert is very clear on that.

"Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report (real Colbert did not attend Dartmouth; the fictional bio on colbertnation.com, however, lists Dartmouth as his alma mater)" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_notable_Dartmouth_alumni

Wikipedia clearly states the biography at Colbertnation is fictional. Comedians create characters- remember Stuart Smiley? Rosanne Rosannadanna? ABC and CBS create intricate fake biographies. One TV show, "Big Love", has incredibly real looking ones.

Colbert is very open about attending Northwestern (which is the equivalent of Dartmouth- it's a public Ivy, and harder to get into. Legacy status has less meaning.

Don't mistake the man for the character.

"If you liked Colbert, you'll love West Wingers?"

No, I think if you like Colbert, you'll see that the West Wingers is an amateur production with amateur writers and performers (though the fellow who does Sean Hannity and Al Franken is rather good).

Try not to be so cocky.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Colbert

I never said he went to Dartmouth, only that you can take the man out of Dartmouth but not Dartmouth out of the man. Who put Dartmouth in the man or, more importantly, who put the man in Dartmouth is not clear. And, moreover, why would he do it? To honor or dishonor Dartmouth? Did the slick, talkin'-out-of-both sides-of-his-mouth character "attend" Dartmouth or the tellin'-it-like-it-is character, who reveals all of life's dirty little secrets a Dartmouth "grad"? Is Dartmouth the dark side or the heroic left side?

Somehow, Colbert, supposedly, makes it clear he didn't go to Dartmouth but you have to cite Wikipedia to make the point. How clear is that? If you're a drinking buddy or can successfully negotiate numerous websites - you might as well try Snopes while you're at it - to find out the truth then it's not clear at all. Isn't this obfuscation of identity similar to the circuitous way the Administration handles "the truth"?

Oh but, I know, I don't get it. He acts that way to prove just how duplicitous the Administration is. Right? Without the character, the point can't be made, as if it takes another doubleganger to prove the existence of a doubleganger in the first place. D2 = truth! And, of course, because most of us didn't go to Northwestern, or to the small list of schools as good as one writer says Northwestern is, we can't get all the duplicity unless it's acted out before our very eyes - duplicitously. Gee I'm glad you finally cleared up the mystery of how someone so devoted to truthiness is guilty of the same kind of deception as is his targets.

The more Colbear's apologists have to explain his act, and defend his bifurcated - or is it triufurcated (I forget) - personality, the more feeble his act becomes. I started out with a semi-critical observation, calling him brilliant, yet the slings and arrows that have been subsequently used to defend everything he's ever done makes him, in retrospect, appear sort of sad. Which is probably how he divided his personality - akin to multiple personality disorder - in the first place. Actually, let's all say a prayer for him, or, oops, don't tell me, he's not actually Catholic or religious, as he says he is, but a cannibalistic warlock replete with Gothic outfits for the weekend?

Colbert - smarter than the average bomb

Thanks for covering Colbert at the White House Correspondent's Association dinner. I wish Fox news would loop Colbert's jokes the way they looped Howard Dean's amplified scream. Anyone who has the balls to slap Bush in his own house has my respect.

He bombed because he wasn't funny

I'm a knee-jerk liberal. I watched Colbert on C-Span and was embarrassed for him because he just wasn't funny.

Painfully accurate

Wow. What can I say? Colbert has more guts in his little toe than the entire press corp. Sadly, only humor can explain these gutless wonders. Poignant pleasure by a real reporter: The Colbert Report. Thanks ;-)

do I have to remind you that TV comedy is fiction?

On the 60 minutes interview, Colbert made clear that the newscaster on the TV show is a character, a persona he created for a comedy spoof show. And I think everyone is clear on that (except Bob?). No one has to explain that it's a spoof; most people can see that regardless of if they find it funny or not. Comics assume characters all the time, not just for skits, but for stand up too. Remember Bobcat Goldwaith? Chevy Chase doing the news on SNL?

Geeze, he's a political comic. If you don't like his leanings, OK. But don't get all falsly indignant claiming he's misleading the nation.

Do we get made at Sylvester Stallone because he claimed to be Rambo? No, we realize it was a role he was playing. We like the movie or not, but we don't go on a tirade agaist Sly for lying. We understand he was ACTING/.

Colbert

Thank God that there are still a few brave people like Cobert who are not afraid to offend "our great leader"... mein fuhrer... George "if I only had a brain" Bush. Thank you Colbert!!!!!

It was actually uncomfortable to watch the good little sheep of the "press" as they sqirmed in their seats, afraid that if they smiled, "Little Stalin" would be angry with them.

The way things are in Amerika today, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Comedy Central was forced to pull The Colbert Report.

No need for a hammer

Colbert's jabs were on the mark but had little finesse. While Bush's skit was a subtle and effective attack on himself. In my opinion Colbert turned off most of the people he was trying to reach. Colbert should put away the hammer.

subtle bushit

Yeah, commander codpiece is as subtle as a beer fart in an elevator. catch a clue, dick. or bill, as in big fucking deficet bill for our children. colbert rocks the casbah.

Amazing stuff!

It is amazing to me that Colbert was able to deliver his address. I'm suprised they didn't find a way to shut it down, like all other dissent. I'm sure it won't happen again, but Colbert is the man! To stand up and thoughtfully challenge this incredibly deceitful administration! I've never seen comedy used so well...
