Fox 5: Punk'd!

Morning news prank sends anchor into a rage.

The letters thread is now closed.

Jodi Applegate, schoolmarm

And they say Fox doesn't hire calm, reasonable reporters and commentators. Jodi Applegate: moralist, blondanista, fussy schoolmarm.

Friday, July 28, 2006 08:25 AM

What does Fox want us to decide now?

Fake accidents on national news = uncool.

Demonstration of how to steal a bike = both cool and newsworthy.

Friday, July 28, 2006 08:49 AM

Wha'?

Anybody catch the irony that the anchor is outraged because children are watching, but apparently doesn't have a problem showing children (and adults) a detailed demonstration of how to steal a bicycle?

Friday, July 28, 2006 08:58 AM

not cool dude

I like how she makes sure she uses the proper vernacular when dealing with young men...

Words such as "cool" and "dude"

It's too bad she didn't do the background research on the Neisat Brothers to realize what their all about.

Fox, the "How To" Network

Today, boys & girls, we'll teach you how to steal a bicycle (after WE stole the idea from another channel). In November we'll show you how to steal elections!

Friday, July 28, 2006 11:16 AM

nobody's watching

my favorite part is when she says, "children are watching," as if anyone watches the show period.

Friday, July 28, 2006 12:18 PM

Funniest thing I've seen in a while.

That was hilarious. Who says that Fox news' investigative journalists aren't thorough? They never get caught misrepresenting the truth......serious news with comedians? I just thought their anchors where the only comedians (read joke) on the network. Do they seriously believe that bike theives are going around town with power cords, generators and angle grinders to steal a stupid bike?

FOX NEWS: WE MANIPULATE, YOU GET CONFUSED.

Friday, July 28, 2006 12:19 PM

What do you expectt?

They just faked this guy getting his finger sliced off. She just had a major scare, with a major adrenaline rush. And then she learns that it was faked.

I am the last person to be a Fox apologist, but come on, how would you react?

Friday, July 28, 2006 02:02 PM

I know the world is different...

I know that we're all supposed to be nervous and worried and scared now that humorless baby boomers are in charge and we've been attacked by terrorists...but do you think we could have some small part of our sense of humor back, perhaps?

Friday, July 28, 2006 04:51 PM

AND

it didn't look like that little grinder was doing such a great job getting through the 'cold rolled' that was holding that bike down. I know when I look for bikes to steal, I don't want to do a lot of heavy lifting in daylight. The whole idea is a ruse.

Friday, July 28, 2006 04:56 PM

Does FOX Hire NOTHING But Self-Important Assholes?!

It boggles the mind.

Friday, July 28, 2006 11:18 PM

no, really

Anyone who thinks she is overreacting is utterly full of shit. If you think you would react differenlty you are sooo lying to yourself. Shut up!

Saturday, July 29, 2006 09:55 AM

Aw, come on.

I don't know this Jodi Applegate, but I have to feel for her. Stuck doing stupid fluff stories about how easy it is to steal bicycles, having two idiots try to play an entirely sophomoric (and not very well-executed) prank that made my efforts look unprofessional would piss me off, too.

Still, she might have come off a little better if she'd taken it in stride.

Saturday, July 29, 2006 11:04 AM

The real joke...

..is that somebody would steal a bicycle by pulling out a power-grinder in the middle of a crowded city block in broad daylight. Something tells me that neither of those guys has ever committed a theft worse than accidentally pilfering a buddy's "420" lighter while out on the Frisbee-golf course.

When, oh WHEN, will Phish go back on tour so Fox can conduct their hard-hitting journalism without the irreponsible jocularity of these sorts of subversive beatniks?

Saturday, July 29, 2006 04:38 PM

Bravo, Ms Applegate

It's hard being a grown-up in a society where acting like a spoiled punk kid is considered normal behavior. Now, if Fox would only take the same attitude toward the louder spoiled punk kids who run their evening shows, the airwaves would be a cleaner place.

Sunday, July 30, 2006 10:50 AM

But, it wasn't cool.

The journalist was right. those guys were being jerks.

Sunday, July 30, 2006 08:06 PM

Applegate's reaction wasn't as bad...

...as the stunt itself. Poorly planned and amateurishly executed, those kids got what they deserved.

Monday, July 31, 2006 11:53 AM

Because Live Reporting has so much more meaning....

The live report has become widely overused – every once in a while there will be fallout. There was no need to do that segment live, but they chose to and got punked. Fair enough. I’m tired of watching some reporter standing ||live|| outside the courthouse at 10:05 telling me what happened earlier in the afternoon. No need to show some slackers trying to cut a bike lock live.

Some producer trying to justify $80,000 worth of cool electronics that enhances the News 5 experience…..

Monday, July 31, 2006 02:33 PM

"...on our air..."

Who do the airwaves belong to again? News Flash! FOX is renting them from us: the people. Remember "the people?"

"Are you a self-centered jackass? Do you look good on camera? Apply to FOX news NOW!"

Tuesday, August 1, 2006 01:38 AM

Hilarious joke

Brightened my day. Applegate should be named CRUMPLEBOTTOM for being such a PRUDE.

Kids see worse REAL accidents on the evening news. To act as though this would defile their innocents is being rather pompous and tightassed.

I'm sure those guys would agree that it was worth it.

That was cool "dude"!
