I know Stephanie found this one a bit too quirky, but I fell madly in love with this film. I can't speak highly enough of it. I admit it's affected but the freshness of the dialogue and characters' portrayals (both by the cast and the writer / director) made this one stand out.
Compare this video to the first couple of videos and it's obvious that you're slowly paring away the negatives and zeroing in on the things that work.
The main plus is there is simply more substance.
I am glad Matt Singer is getting more opportunity to offer his opinion instead of merely being the Intro Guy. I don't visit the IFC site -- is he a writer there? He expresses himself well.
Also Stephanie Zacharek is getting much more natural in front of the camera. In the early videos I sensed more self-consciousness. I also like her toned-down appearance....no need to get too fancy for us filmgoers, we just wanna hear about the pics!
I liked what she had to say about the Tony Leung film. It's not high on my list of films to catch up on but you made a good case for at least putting it in the radar.
Also glad to hear you dug "Juno." I agree, the first few minutes don't do the film justice. All the business about the chair, and transfering discarded furniture to the lawn, made me feel like I was watching an alternate-universe sequel to "Ghost World." Then the real "Juno" movie kicked in and everything was OK.
Matt Singer does a good job selling why that docu-experimental-indie movie thing is worthy. He mentions that it isn't mean-spirited or condescending. That's good, although isn't there a place for a mean-spirited and condescending film about reality TV culture? I hope somebody eventually makes one.
