I want to see more videos of what regular Iraqis are doing to maintain sanity and safety in the chaotic world we have foisted on them.
You'd think a bunch of young men would want to swin with a bunch of young women.
The video doesn't give any context about the lives of young women in the same social class and neighborhood. I assume they are in much more danger than the men are.
I'm also not sure whether men and women swim together in Iraq society. It's hard to imagine women who often wear veils or burkhas (from what I understand) being able to freely wear swimsuits (even modest one-pieces) around men.
Maybe somebody who is familiar with Iraq society, or other Middle-East society, can clear this up.
The news footage I saw before the war showed Iraqi women dressed and moving in society just the same as EU women would. The islamists seem to be forcing a change on women. Thanks to Bush's war, women have lost their place in the wider world.
Just as the war was starting, I saw a news piece where a very professional, western-appearing young woman was asked if the Iraqi society was going to change and put women into a world like the Taliban. The young woman answered quickly and confidently, "Absolutely not. We will never go back to that." I think that would be in the category of "famous last words."
I hope for that very bright young woman's sake that she was able to leave Iraq.
