OK, this just doesn't seem all that nutty to me. Compared to 90% of the whack-jobs on TV (especially reality TV) these days, she seems serene and lucid.
She still has the same musical-theater-over-the-top persona she's always had. She's just older now. So what? Yeah, she married and messily divorced a gay plastic surgery junkie. Mmmkay. Sure, there are stories and court papers indicating a history of messy drinking and substance abuse problems...her problems, not ours. I'm not sure what it is that you're pointing to here as being "media missteps." Laughing too loudly at her own jokes on Larry King's show? That's just Liza.
I'm positive that I wouldn't enjoy hanging out with Liza. I value genuine interaction too much, and in social situations that sort of always-performing persona leaves me cold. BUT. When she's on stage, she's doing what she's always done--singing her songs and SELLING the hell out of them. To me, it seems kind of quaint in this era to see her doing the old-style schtick. Yes, she's histrionic and a blatant attention whore, but she's always been that way. With her constitution, she never had any choice but to be a big, hammy stage performer, poor dear. She's not going to be performing for many more years. As long as people want to see her, why not let her bask in the attention she lives for--and when it gets to be too much, just look away.
Go 'head, Miss Liza.
I was all set to laugh at the crazy lady, but hey, if Chris Walken pulled the same kind of performances, I'd be crowning him the winking king of lunacy. I don't know if it's simply Ms. Minnelli's wonderful guest stint on Arrested Development, but I'm willing to cut her a lot of slack. She looks like she's having fun in whatever mental world she's colonized.
If the New York Times had referenced this series of appearances, I bet you Becky Traister would've likely have come to Liza's defense.
She's 60 years old, the child of a dysfunctional superstar mother, a recovering alcoholic and probably drug addict, and she has entertained people for decades. So if she's a little hyperbolic, can't we give her a break?
Shame on you!
You call that amateur hatchet job "expertly edited"? Excuse me, (I'm a TV producer and former editor)--but that's the kind of nasty mean spirited editing that can make anyone look bad. The sort of crummy two minute edit job that some jaded broadcast editors do to amuse themselves while the producer is out gettting coffee. But that kind of cheap laugh never makes it out of the edit suite.
The proof is in the DeGeneres segment, where Liza is charming, self-deprecating, and exuberant. Over the top? So what. Really. SO what?
I suppose you'd be more comfortable with her if she was bland, middle american, and apologetic for turning 60?
So her NY NY is a little over the top. So she missed as couple of beats. She's full of life and energy. This is the woman who played in Cabaret. She's a legend. You owe her an apology.
Can anyone honestly say she's ever been talented? She was perfect in Cabaret, but let's be honest, if she didn't have famous Hollywood parents the Kit Kat Klub would be just the kind of place she'd call home.
She seems harmless, and good-spirited though, so more power to her...and through all her trials and tribulations I've never heard her say an unkind word about anyone.
I've never liked Liza, but I thought these three performances were delightful. In the Larry King interview, she seemed to be doing a Phyllis Diller impression, but who cares? Her Ellen song cracked me up. And I doubt any of today's lip-synching pop divas will have Liza's spunk and charisma when they reach her age. I, too, was ready to laugh at the crazy lady, but the lady in these clips was quite impressive.
Liza always creeped me out, but I don't see anything shocking about these clips. I liked her song on Ellen. At least she's not one of those zombie celebrities who only say what their pr guy told them to say. That Larry King editing job seemed pretty unfair.
I have no idea what Liza was on during the Larry King interview, but, I want some of that! That cracked me up, thanks for the great laugh! You gotta love Liza, with no voice remaining whatsoever, she's still out there doing the only thing she knows how to do: entertain.
How does this qualify as a "crazed tour of media missteps?"
Granted, she seems a bit kooky in the Larry King clip, but that's most probably due to the hatchet-job editing.
As for the other two clips, how, exactly, are those crazed missteps? She's actually pretty funny and self-deprecating on Ellen. As for her rendition of New York, New York, when, exactly, has Liza Minelli not been a bit over the top in her performances?
So crazed tour of media missteps? Not really. Perfect example of Video Dog missteps? Definitely.
I saw the Larry King interview and was shocked at how ill prepared Larry King was - you'd have thought he'd never heard of Liza before the camera started rolling AND that he didn't have a staff of twenty people doing his research for him and coming up with questions for him to ask. The man was an idiot. Liza was simply Liza. I love the updated "I'm Glad I'm Not Young Anymore" song, it says it all. And as to the London performance, well, she's had vocal problems for years and probably shouldn't be performing anymore, but I'll bet she still got a standing ovation. If Liza qualifies as a train wreck then the Jessica/Brittany/Christina/Paris crew are nuclear disasters.
Well, although I don't much care for her singing, I will always be grateful for Liza's appearances on Arrested Development. Great stuff. :)
It's wrong to make fun of people v-dog, even if they are a little kooky.
