Pickens is advocating a plan that will take years to implement and even at best will only address a fraction of the problem. The infrastructure that needs to be built is daunting, as is the, yet to be invented, storage medium for the days those windmills are simply not spinning. At least McCain is advocating the construction of 45 new nuclear power plants, a technology we know works, along with the pursuit of alternative technologies. It's a little myopic to focus only on a couple of technologies, one of them still in it's infancy, while conveniently ignoring other proven methods of producing power. We're already 20 years behind the curve on this one. I would suggest nothing be taken off the table at this point. We might have to buy a little time using methods of production that are not that clean as we would prefer in the short term, until solar, wind, geothermal and other technologies become mainstream.
