Sweetie
I've been wasting a lot of time on Hulu.com lately, and one of the shows I've seen for the first time is Bones. The show itself is moderately interesting, no great work of art, but there is a character — Angela, I think is her name — who constantly addresses her co-workers as "sweetie." She's a professional woman in a professional situation, and I find this habit of hers to be absolutely endearing and in no way condescending. I can't imagine that Obama means it any other way, and frankly I'm much more concerned with actual intentions than with any political shadings that can be shoehorned onto his choice of words.
