Red State Update: Legalize drugs, save Mexico

Jackie and Dunlap imagine a world where Sam's Club sells weed, the recession ends and there's no more violence.

The letters thread is now closed.

Although My Kin Had Lots More in Common with Jackie's Hillbilly Shine Runners,

than I maybe should admit, I have to say that for once Dunlap is smokin' down the right trail! Go, Dunlap, go! Keep talkin' until we can fill up down at Sam's Club on Thai-stick and frozen cookie dough, so I can stop obsessin' about sending Dick Cheney to Guantanamo in a orange jump suit. Please!

Thank you for tearing down the barriers!

I must commend Salon for it's progressive view in so far as mocking people based on their speech patterns, race, social station, geographical location, perceived intelligence etc. etc. This will surly rejuvenate the seeming long lost comedic style. I must shamefully admit that I have sorely missed this form of jest. The return of Amos and Andy must be just on the horizon. Or how about buck toothed Asians (dare I say Orientals) butchering the English language to the delight of young and old alike. Oh and don't forget the Mexican's, with that accent and their unfettered devotion to bouncing cars they will make a wonderful source of parity. This opens the door to an unlimited source of frivolity and fun. Caricatures of gays, Polish, Arabs, Indians (east and west), Swedes, no wait Swedes have been fair game all along, Jews, oops they have the same statis as the Swedes. Any way the list of potential players goes on and on.

I am forwarding this little film to all my right leaning "friends" so they will shut up about how us lefty's are so politically correct about everything.

I can hardly wait for the release of you next wonderfully demeaning and jocular plays. My vote is the homeless that were to stupid to get one of the give away home loans. But you guys go ahead and decide which group to mock next. Lets face it you guys are the pro’s.

Come on, man, lighten up. Dunlap's monologues make fun of, and goose EVERYBODY. Yes, Jackie and Dunlap pretend to be latter-day white-trash low-lifes, but scripts like today's little rant on dope aim to give Conservative and Liberal alike a big wedgie. Dunlap's musings don't have much in common with all the demeaned groups you mention from yesteryear that I can see. Certainly not the "bucktoothed Jap" or the Amos and Andy blackfaced skits I grew up with. These guys get beyond that sad crap to poking at the rotten underbelly of America.

I don't mean to defend "Red State Update," because about half the time they just bore the shit out of me, but here's an idea:

Listen to this one again. Just give it another shot. Sure, they play stereotypical characters, but listen to old Dunlap and think about what he's saying. And if you still insist on being offended, well then, just go ahead and be pissed off.

Joke?

Having been born before Repeal in 1933, I conclude that the US people are a good deal dumber than they used to be: it only took about 15 years for them to see that Prohibition was not only a stupid useless idea, but actually made the whole booze sitution worse. The "War on Drugs" has been going on at least since J.Edgar Hoover, is much more useless and destructive, yet we still haven't repealed it. At a time when we could really use the extra 30 or 40 billion dollars that this boondoggle costs. disigny

I am not pissed off.

You misunderstood my comment. I find these two characters engaging and funny. This is a wonderful format to express and explore difficult subjects. It is a time honored method employed to convey a message both good and bad. My comments are quite serious, I would welcome the return to free and open speech and all that it implies. I honestly say fine even though some of it would surly be offensive to me. Your comment that this behavior can only be applied in selective circumstance where in the controlling majority (the ones with the biggest bullhorn) in a given group find mocking these individuals acceptable. But if you are to hold true to this conviction you must apply it equally to all circumstances. Otherwise your arguments are just rationalizing your own behavior.

You state that this is not offensive, to whom? I sent this to a couple of my wife's relatives in middle Tennessee, Waverly to be exact. They were offended like anyone else. They did see the humor but questioned why is it ok to stereo type them as gaped toothed ignorant yahoos. Yet to portray any of the other groups I mentioned in a similar manner could bring a charge of hate speech and expulsion from your tribe. Deride a western academic in Iran, you will be king. Poke a little fun at Allah and you will likely find yourself dead. The fact that you apparently can’t find the irony in this is stunning.

As long as you don’t start throwing rocks at me I don’t have a problem with what you say or do and I might find most of it very funny.

It appears to me to be old addage about "it depends on who's ox is getting goared".

Apparently you have trouble understanding what you read. You say: "Your comment that this behavior can only be applied in selective circumstance where in the controlling majority (the ones with the biggest bullhorn) in a given group find mocking these individuals acceptable." But, scroll up and you'll see that my opening sentences in my response to you actually said: "Come on, man, lighten up. Dunlap's monolugues make fun of, and goose EVERYBODY. Yes, Jackie and Dunlap pretend to be latter-day white-trash low-lifes, but scripts like today's little rant on dope aim to give Conservative and Liberal alike a big wedgie."

Are you sure you were replying to my post and not someone else's, or are you smoking some of that stuff Dunlap wants to buy down at Sam's Club? How is it possible for you to be 180 degrees off?

And your oh-so-sensitive in-laws down in Tennessee make my point. I admitted to having come from some serious hillbilly/moonshine people myself in the first line of my initial post [not some red-neck wanna-be townies from Tennessee] then went on in the spirit (and Hillbilly voice) of their skit to cheer them on. Obviously I thought Dunlap's remarks were funny, even as his made fun of people I grew up with. But did I say that this kind of humor only worked if it made fun of certain kinds of people or certain groups? Nooooooooo, I did not. Did I say certain groups of people should not be included? Nooooooooooo, I did not.

The real, underlying humor that radiates from Jackie and Dunlap is that they lampoon most Americans, because most Americans, who grew up on a diet of television and cable news and junk food are just not very bright. Most Americans know this, in their secret heart of hearts. They don't read, they don't think, and they do foolish things every chance they get. They voted for Nixon, Reagan, Bush and Bush, didn't they? Most of us understand that Jackie and Dunlap cast a big net that catches most of us fools.

Frankly, I think you're just being obtuse because you're not a careful reader, not a very original thinker, and certainly not a good writer.
