Once you've seen the lame makeover of "Universe of Energy" at Disney's EPCOT, with an animatronic Ellen waving a palm frond to keep a dinosaur at bay, you believe she would do anything for an oblique joke. And yes, I admit I watched the video to see "her" topless...but that's what gave it away, finally. Not even a Wonder Bra could make Gunnar look like that with clothes on.

A new low was reached for Video Dog today. After hyping the clip for the Ellen DeGeneres Show you give us... the opening sequence. No samples of the humor or talents you praise, no indication of what the show is like, just the opening and cheering audience.

Please, kill Video Dog. I like Salon and would like to continue supporting it, but unless you change video dog completely or remove it entirely, I will be forced to leave you and look for something better. The only thing that prevents me from quitting right now is the clip from The Colbert Report.

Rocketboom does a hell of a lot better job that Video Dog, and they don't even pretend to be a news website.

Since my last post, I've visited six other independent news sites and each one had a video clip of Bush being briefed before Katrina hit, especially the clips where the experts tell him the levees will fail and flooding will be disasterous. And what do we get here at Salon's Video Dog? The opening segment of the Ellen show.

How many people here were hoping for a "War Room" type video blog? How many here were hoping for something bettert than this crap? How many here were hoping for something better than a collection of dog photos?

How many people are going to join me in leaving Salon unless they kill Video Dog or get new people running it by the end of the week? There's hundreds of important videos out there, and these idiots don't even show one.

Not everyone wants to be lectured to with whiny lefty agitprop all the time, bitch. If you don't get the humor here, go home and watch CSPAN. Or just log off.

And it's not the opening sequence, you idiot. They're slicing Ellen DeGeneres with Gunnar Nelson, who look a lot alike, and your failure to get it shows that a). they look a fuck of a lot a like, and b). you're a total moron.

Having ditched my television many years ago, I'm so pleased that someone else out there watches all the dreck in order to show me some of the tastiest morsels. I rely on digests like Video Dog to keep me up to speed on all manner of televised happenings, however strange or banal or superficial.

The haughty invectives lashed out at The Dog in regards to this Ellen clip (and anything else that may not maintain a 'serious news' stance) are nothing more than the foamy spittle at the corner of Hooch's maw and should be shaken off with like effort.

There are myriad sites dedicated to providing specific coverage, be it video or written, on newsworthy and, let's say, People-magazine-worthy topics. I think Salon and Video Dog are doing fine straddling the line.

BTW, again, Gunnar Nelson is Ricky Nelson's kid--one of twin musicians in the group Nelson. They had some hair band hits in the very late 80s-early 90s. I think now they are country and western. "After the Rain" rocks, in a humorous sort of way.
