The Super Excellent Happytime Variety Show

Bea Arthur completely emasculates Rock Hudson in that sketch. ...and yes, they're DRINKING the whole time they're discussing recreation drug use. Not to mention, Rock Hudson mentions amyl nitrate (poppers) THREE times - ironic conversation, expert testimony or a cry for help?

Classic... I'm definitely more complete now that I've witnessed this.

Bea and Rock

I saw this on Broadway during its second year when it starred the Smothers Brothers! I doubt that a show whose basic premise was two neighbors interested in a little wife-swapping could even make it to previews today. I don't recall there even being much swearing in the show! Oh, they were innocent times. This is a show due for a revival!

Incredible

Thanks to that Nancy Reagan had to work extra hard in the 80s to counteract "Everyone's Turnin On" with her "Just Say No" anti drug campaign.

Aggh! My eyes! My ears! My eyes!

For those curious, this is from the Bea Arthur Special, which aired on CBS in January of 1980. I cannot verify this, but I seem to remember the next day 48,000 Americans asking Ayatollah Khomeini to take them hostage as well, should it be re-run.

OK, it wasn't THAT bad. Bea Arthur in the Star Wars Holiday Special -- THAT was bad. Make-the-Pope-an-atheist bad. And Bea Arthur was the best part.

*cough*

Pardon the frankness, but I think my inner-clubgoing, showtune-whistling gay man just exploded.

Funny but painful to watch

Oy, they were so bad!

and how interesting

that all through the little video, they're drinking. And at the end, Rock's feet are propped up on a table with a giant ashtray. This song is about recreational drug use, but they're certainly not endorsing it.

Reminds me of a Bill Hicks quote:

"Alcohol kills more people every year than coke, pot and smack combined. But it's the illegal drugs that are bad, kids. Those untaxed drugs. Those unpatented drugs."

Call me when Bea Arthur tells a good acid story on the news.

Ah, the good ol' days of television

What this culture needs is more variety shows!

There Is NO WAY This Was On Network TV

So I wonder who broadcast it?
