What's your damage?

FX's scheming-lawyer drama "Damages" is back for a fast-paced, twisted sophomore season that might just be better than the first.

I didn't get the appeal of this the first time round

Frankly, apart from the Ray Fiske character I didn't care about anyone, because all of the characters were secondary to the needs of the plot. What characterisation there was tended to be over the top and cartoony. Added to which, it suffered from a surfeit of twists and turns; once you realise that you can't trust anything, you also tend to stop caring. For me, the twisty-turny thriller genre only works if I've got strong characters to care about and believe in, because otherwise I simply don't invest myself emotionally in people if I know they're likely to turn out traitors, spies, turncoats etc. who have nothing whatsoever in common with who they first appear to be.

Damages

I have to agree with Thirith. If there's no character to identify with, no one sympathetic, then there's only the fleeting fascination of gawking at an auto accident. If the writers are trying to get viewers to examine themselves for their own motives, or point out that there is both good and bad, reasonable and irrational in all of us - okay, I get that. But to make it THE theme of the entire series - it doesn't hold me. Additionally, the flashes forward in time and backward in time are not just unnerving, they make me work too hard. I don't want to work that hard to watch a tv show.

On the other hand, the actors are fabulous and I am glad they have work that obviously is satisfying to them. Just wish it was n=more satisfying to me, the audience member.

I third it

I managed to watch the whole first season, but I had to make myself do it. Though the plotting had lots of cliffhangers and mysteries to make it fun, I found it more confusing than engaging, and found the characters completely unsympathetic. The actors are mostly good, but there's a hell of a lot of scenery chewing going on. At least the new season isn't burdened with Zeljko Ivanek's horrendous stereotype of a Southern lawyer.

Hard to top the first season

Thought the first season was sharp and one of the best drama series debut seasons ever. Great writing, great acting. Figures a few Sopranos writers and directors are involved. Looking forward to season two.

best show on television

Damages is one of the finest written shows on television. Everyone is smart, the characters think before they speak. It's also amazing because each character is jocking to be 3 steps in front of their rival, or their friend for that matter. Who am I kidding, no one has friends on this show. That's another thing that makes it great, no sentimental poop to wade through. The best man wins because he or she is smarter, faster, willing to go the extra mile or just plain dirtier than their counter part. The lead character is a woman you love to hate. Her chief rival is a good girl who has gone to the dark side. What's not to love about that!? This isn't real life, it's Damages. I want to be that evil and look that good doing it!!
