Semisweet "Chocolate News"

Is David Alan Grier's flava-ful new sketch comedy show a black version of "The Daily Show"?

The letters thread is now closed.

WTF?

This is Salon, right? Why is Fox News advertising here? I thought this was a Reilly, Hannity free zone.

SOme of us do know who Tavis Smiley is

I think the problem is that the reviewer doesn't get the "in" jokes. A rant on Ice Cube selling out? I'm there. I may crib material. 50 Cent sold out the minute he showed up. And the touchy Afrocentric types- I had a fight with one two weeks ago. I'll be watching to get material for round two.

I am a middle class black, a "bougie" black. I got all of the references. I suspect it will be like "In Living Color" when we all called each other and said "Did they really do that?" My white colleagues did NOT get that show. I dare say it's the same thing all over again.

"Thanks, but No Thanks Mr. Grier."

I'm one who didn't find the comedy stylings of someone like Dave Chappelle funny, and I never thought David Alan Grier was funny either. Now that I think of it, I didn't really care for the 5 or so shows of In Living Color I saw either, because that show was filled with TOO many negative and stereotypical African-American characters for my taste, and from the commercials I've seen promoting Grier's show, I definitely know not to waste my good time watching Grier's new show either, which seems to me will nothing more than a rehashing of The Dave Chappelle and In Living Color comedy shows.

In the words of Pathological liar Sarah Palin...

"Thanks, but NO Thanks Mr. Grier."

No

wish it were, it could then draft the senior brown advisor and actually be funny.

more likely

a whiter version of "the chapelle show"..

but i'll wait and see..

from what I've seen....

The ads I've seen during the Daily Show make it look dreadful -- racist and unfunny. I'm not even tempted to watch it.

i love the gratuitous whack at Lieberman at the end...

a little payoff for reading an overlong review...

Haven't seen it yet...

but I'm sending good vibes to DAG. I've always found him funny so I hope he can find a niche here.

Rooting for Brother Grier

David Alan Grier is an extremely talented man...it's nice that he has a new platform on which to display that talent. I hope that enough of my fellow "urban" types watch the show to make it as successful as In Living Color.

Nah

Even the title of the show turns me off.

I'm white so I probably am legally barred from having an opinion

sorry

O'RLY?

I thought it was a black version of the Dave Chappelle Show.

Bill-o

Not many have the same name recognition as Bill O'Reilly, least of all someone black. So that comment made little sense to me. Otherwise, as someone else noted, this sounds like something that you either get or you don't.

Shorter shows would be better

It does take a while for shows like this to hit their stride.

But I contend that shows like Colbert's and probably this one would be better served in a 15 minute format.

The 30 (really 22) minute show doesn't require the discipline of having really tight humor plus it's a lot of time to fill.

I'm also wondering if we are ever going to get beyond the "I'm a white/black and I don't get it/it's offensive/not enough power for truth" BS.

Not So Sweet

There is no doubt that Mr. Grier has enough talent to pull the show off. However, there is currently too much Grier and not enough good writing. The show needs balance.

The top three Comedy Central offerings in these personality-headed venues have been: Chappelle, Daily Show and Colbert Report.

There is nothing wrong with satisfying Mr. Grier's self-love (as the others do) with his face being the face of the program. But I think it will be more successful (as with the others) if he brings in more perspectives.

They all suffer (even Saturday Night Live and Mad TV) from dead spots perhaps due to too much "inside" thinking. Chocolate News, however, handicaps itself the most. I predict that the show will fail miserably without fresher comedic perspectives.

We already know what you have done, Mr. Grier. These days, however, we're more interested in what you can do. It's your ship -- and people will recognize that -- even if there is less you and more variety (even one-timers) in your offering. -- emwbt
