Saw it a year or so ago. Excellent. Covers the spectrum of human emotion. As good as the film in different ways. Mush more time to explore other characters and subplots. Very highly recommended.
There's also a documentary about the favelas which is as dramatic as the fictional series. In the documentary a police captain confesses how absurd the policies are, and how they're basically apartheid, right before resigning. He also points out that much of the drug/gang money goes towards the purchase of weapons, and that many of the arms are from Belgium, Austria, etc. A walk though a warehouse of seized weapons it truly mind boggling. Literally a warehouse with guns stacked up the walls and across the floor, maybe tens of thousands. Everything from home made guns with hand carved handles, to anti-tank weapons.
btw, also good is the series "Planet Earth" a 4 DVD series with the most breathtaking nature photography you'll ever see. Even if you don't like nature shows, this one will have you saying "WOW!" every five minutes and rewinding. No kidding.
It was shot with Hollywood cinematographers and high tech cameras. The production values are so polished, vivid and glossy, and some of the subjects so bizarre of shot from angles you've never seen (including from space) it feels like a high budget CG film, only real. Truly mind blowing.
Sundance has shown all four seasons of City of Men. The series isn't running this month, but the Sundance site includes some great video clips.

City of God was not, relatively speaking, that violent of a film. If we compare it to say, the Die Hard films or really any Hollywood "Action" blockbuster. I would take issue with calling City of God a "bloodbath" or "ultra-violent". Why the violence in City of God is more shocking than the violence in mainstream movies is due to gritty realism, rather than pure volume.
Chose your words carefully and with a bit more tact.
Wish I could watch it...cable's too damn expensive as it is.
The movie scared the crap out of me...my stomach was in knots. Far more effective than any horror movie.
If you are a subscriber to Netflix: they have the entire series (about 19 episodes) in their Watch Instantly section.
