"full figured"?

Size 6 is plus-sized?!

Thursday, May 15, 2008 07:45 AM

what the hell

Since WHEN is Size 6 considered "full figured"??!! We can't even *realistically* start talking about "full figured" and "zaftig" until double-digit sizes are reached.....

This cognitive dissonence is why girls (and women) today are so screwed up about their bodies.

The finale should have been different

If this show were really about who will be the best model model (as opposed to role model), instead of Whitney, Katarzyna should have been in the final three, and in the final two, vs. Anya.

At least imho.

Plus-size?

Since when is a size 6 plus size?

Thursday, May 15, 2008 08:06 AM

I know, I know

As a woman I know I'm supposed to feel outrage that this show is even on the air, that a size 6 is considered plus-sized, that I'm being asked to take Tyra seriously.

All I know is that, season after season, I eat it up. It entertains me and, more than that, it speaks to my inner model.

She's not a 6

Whitney is hot as hell - and the girl is drop dead beautiful. But if she's a size 6, so am I. She's more like a 10-12, which is NOT heavy, of course - just "full-figured" in the jacked up world of fashion and modeling.

Plus-size?

Are you kidding me? A size 6 is NOT "plus-size"

Thursday, May 15, 2008 09:02 AM

@ other letter writers

So, I wish someone could tell me: is Size 6 plus-sized?

Thursday, May 15, 2008 09:06 AM

Go Whitney!

For once my favorite contestant won a cycle! I thought Whitney was TERRIFIC--gorgeous (whatever her real size is), spunky, and she managed to hold on to her self-esteem in a house full of skinny, skinny women. Anya was strange--I never saw her appeal, especially after they dyed her hair such a bizarre shade of pale, pale blond. She looked so washed out. And that unplaceable accent was combined with a speech impediment. She was almost impossible to understand.

Fatima will probably make it in the modeling industry after all of this exposure. How ironic that she really IS a Barbie, in that her horrific genital mutilation has left her that way. It would be a wonderful thing if greater awareness of her personal tragedy helps raise consciousness and change cultural practice in Africa, but that's a lot to expect. Somehow that practice needs to change, but how?

"indefinable accent"

Anya's from Hawai'i and her accent is pidgen; or at least the pidgen that locals speak there.

If you go to Hawai'i and leave the tourist areas and meet some of the locals you ... well ... you want understand a word they're saying. But they will sound like Anya.

WTF?

If her size isn't in the double-digits, IT ISN'T PLUS SIZE.

This model is lovely, healthy-looking, and should be the norm rather than the exception. That people find her fat is depressingly ludicrous.

The role models keep getting skinnier, but the average Joe and Jane just keep getting fatter. There's something seriously wrong with the way we approach beauty and fitness. Perhaps if there were more cover girls like this one, more people would quit with the self-loathing, put down the junk food, and be inspired to take better care of themselves.

Size 14+

The popular plus-size retailer Lane Bryant starts its sizes at 14.

Nice front page spoiler! :(

thanks for the spoiler, why not put her picture up there too?

She's not a size six...

Not sure where Salon got their info, but Whitney actually is a size ten. That's what a quick Google told me.

In the modeling world...

Look, a size six IS what plus-sized models wear. Maybe an 8, tops, but they're never in the double digits. Ever.

In my last job as a magazine editor, I booked models for photo shoots. The regular models were a maximum of a size 2, more usually 0; the "plus" division girls were no larger than a size 8. They only look "bigger" because they seem that way in comparison to other models. So yes, in the real world, it's crazy to think that a size six is plus-sized. In modeling, it's not. That's about the only part of ANTM that gets it right.

For what it's worth, Whitney's claim that she was always chubby seems a little off. Have you seen pictures of her from before the show (link below)? She could have lost 20 pounds to be a "regular" model, or she could have gained about 20 to be a "plus" model. She did the latter.

Plus-Size Models...

...are almost ALWAYS double-digits. Look at two of the most successful ones: Mia Tyler and Emme. Neither of them was an 8 or smaller. Not a chance.

In terms of reality, no, they aren't the true 14+ Plus sizes, but they are usually a 10 or a 12.

ANTM Whitney

Being a nurse ,I see every aspect of self loathing due to body image. It was a blessing to see a so called "plus sized" model win on ANTM. My best friend and I watch every show ,every week, every season,in anticipation of the "fat girl" getting the ax, only to be pleasantly aghast by the sexy Whitney pulling it off.She definitely was the most appealling of the entire group(blonde or brunette). Koudos to Tyra for a true reality of what America sees as beautiful. For as many televisions as this show reaches,it is a beginning for young girls around the world to start loving their their own bodies.

Whitney's true size

Whitney said herself on one of the shows, she was a size 10....where do you get she is a size 6? That nice butt would not fit in a 6....trust me I have one of those.

Thursday, May 15, 2008 10:47 AM

There is a difference

Between being a plus-sized model and being a model who is plus sized. The latter does not exist, particularly in the high fashion world. I don't understand how Whitney would ever be perceived as a "Super" model, whereas Anya could fit right into that category. That being said, ANTM is really more focused on commercial than high fashion or couture. I still don't understand how they will market Whitney. High fashion is about being able to wear clothes like a hanger, so you can see how the material hangs and flows (without getting caught on bumps and hips)

Let me put this debate to rest.

Thank you, everyone, for pointing out the error in my article. Whitney is, indeed, a size 10, not a size 6. My mistake, for which I apologize, and the story has since been corrected.
