Stop the presses!

The suspenseful BBC miniseries "State of Play," about a band of ruthless newspaper reporters, is as rigorously demanding as "The Wire."

The letters thread is now closed.

Yes!

Thanks, Laura. I watched State of Play when it aired on BBC America and thought it one of the most compelling series I'd seen on television. There are a few lovely gems coming over from Britain these days (okay, I do watch Torchwood but I think it's pretty disposable). None have yet lived up to the power of State of Play, although Life on Mars came pretty damned close (and, interestingly, both feature the pensive and delightful John Simm).

Couldn't Agree More

John Simm's work in Life on Mars drew me to this miniseries (which also features his co-star from LoM, Philip Glenister, in a smaller, supporting role). I bought the Region 2 DVDs about a year ago. It's good, good stuff. But not for the viewer looking for a few nights of low-keyed entertainment. You've got to pay attention. It's a complex story that moves at a breakneck pace. But if you can keep up, you'll be richly rewarded.

Every dang day

it's another Salon or Slate drool-fest over the Wire. Now it's a story about some other country's show that is somewhat similar to the Wire - oh Joy! Quit the navel gazing. Change the channel. Please.

Oh shut up jgarth

State of Play was an amazing series, and I'm glad it's getting the recognition it deserves. It aired on Showcase (in Canada) about 3 yrs ago and I tried to diligently tape all the episodes, but the order got all screwed up and I missed a few. Ever since I've been trying to find out if the series is going to be repeated on TV but no such luck. Finally (finally!) my local arthouse DVD store has it available as a rental. And so my saga ends ;o)

Short wait for State of Play

After reading this review I went straight to Netflix to add it to me queue. Your column may have contributed to the fact that there is now a short wait for this DVD!

Just what I need, another addiction

I'll try anything with Bill Nighy! Sounds great. Like the point about 'deeply flawed' at the end.
