Letters to the Editor

OF COURSE we're all fanboy (or girl) geeks! Why else would we bother to comment? And if you didn't know that arguing about plot points and character misperceptions with an entirely innapropriate amount of passion is part of being a fanboy geek, then I question your own geek status.

If only they were mini-series
An earlier letter touched on my feeling about the inevitable fate so many television dramas these days. A very well written series gains attention and an audience in its first season. Network celebrates their money maker and sets up for more seasons. Writing suffers as more challenges are cooked up for the protagonists who now will no doubt succeed as the characters are now popular Add in a few love interests for filler and the occasional massive-coincidence dependent plot twist and you wind up with a lame dissappointment.
Then we will all comment on the decay of what seemed to have so much potential at first, when the reality is that the concept really only had so magic to go around. I never saw "24". But it always seemed like a great idea that could only work for one season. Trying to repeat it just insures unbearable silliness.
It is too bad that the business of show business completely prevents these ideas from bring mini-series with a pre-defined ending that everything works toward. I enjoyed Heroes despite its already being dependent on way too many coincidental connections between characters. I mean really, it starts to look like NYC has a population of about 200, with about another 1000 for the rest of the world. I cringe to think of how this will be expanded in successive seasons. But if it falls apart as I expect, I'll try to remind myself that we'll always have season 1.
