Christopher asked him to?
sorry if this has been posted already, but didn't Christopher ask Tony to finish him off? He said to Tony "call me a taxi"--i took that to mean, bring Death to me.

Call Me a Taxi
jillhomer,
I think calling a taxi is calling an ambulance.

i was wrong
after posting and discussing with a friend, i watched the scene again [HBO OnDemand, fantastic], i was wrong. Chris clearly wasn't asking for it, he asked for help. Tony saw an opportunity and took it. Sad stuff.

Justification
For several years the Sopranos have shown us the humanity behind the Mafia. We have grown more comfortable with their lifestyle, language and how they take care of business. We have been allowed to become emotionally involved with Tony and Christopher's struggle with good and evil.
We have hoped against hope they will see the light. I applaud the writers and producer for reminding us of the true nature of these dastardly people we have grown to love. -- Cesare Terranova,an Italian Magistrate murdered in 1979 said it all: "The Mafia is oppression, arrogance, greed, self-enrichment, power and hegemony above and against all others.
It is not an abstract concept, or a state of mind, or a literary term... It is a criminal organization regulated by unwritten but iron and inexorable rules... The myth of a courageous and generous 'man of honor' must be destroyed, because a mafioso is just the opposite."
Christopher displayed these sentiments beautifully by gunning down his AA mentor and realigning himself with his true identity. Christopher was a mirror image of his father figure Tony, who knew like himself, Christopher was not redeemable. They had both sold their soul's to the devil years ago.
Tony's ability to kill Christopher was a healthy and normal response for a don, clearly this is who Tony really is. This was merely a business decision, Christopher posed an ongoing danger to the safety and survival of Tony and The Family. As a don, Tony was justified in what he did, I don't think he is in a state of denial.
AJ is not going to make it in the Mafia, he will live his day's out in an institution until he makes peace with the fact he is not his fathers son.
