I could not agree with you more. What's so crazy is that Chloe was always selling herself and her designs as being designed for real women: women who shop in her store. Yet there was not a single dress in her collection that I could wear. They were FUGly.
On the other hand, there were pieces in Daniel's collection (and even Santino's!) that I could wear, especially if they were properly proportioned for a size 8 gal with hips.
Overall, all three collections were a disappointment. BUT Kara's collection ROCKED! I was completely surprised by it. It's beautiful and cohesive and fun and lovely. This finale just left me so unsatisfied.
One last thing: the comments the judges made about Daniel's inexperience implied that he was being penalized for it, and for his young age. If they felt he was too young to win, why let him compete?!
The people with the most money to be made from the results of the show are directly responsible for the rather ho-hum designs that were presented last night were the Project Runway producers. There's even that little snippet in the credits after the show saying the judges consulted with the producers to determine who was cut.
I was very disappointed in the mass of pret-a-porter designs being shuffled down that runway. While I wasn't expecting Versacci haute couture, it would have been nice to see something that gave an impression as to "this is what I design".
Santino definitely nailed Chloe. Everything she showed last night was excellently constructed, like the facade of a sky-scraper designed by Yamasaki rather than Gehry.
that big bitch kors shit on anything inventive or nearing a coy twist on something conventional, thusly those who would have pushed the envelope were forced to give a moments pause, leading to more boring and thusly conventional designs. my girl friend and i watched the whole series and were sort of wondering where all the shooting down of novel ideas would lead and there it was last night. michael kors, el yuck!
I think Chloe is being unfairly punished for her business acumen. The evening wear she trotted down the runway wasn't particularly wearable, but most runway isn't. And the 80s was a recurrent theme this season. She nailed that look. Santino is a nightmare whose designs lacked cohesion, and Daniel's clothes were so bland. Many people have said his runway looked like Talbot's or Ann Taylor. That's not couture.
First off I couldn't stand Santino. He should have been eliminated before the final round. With that said; his designs last night were probably the best of the bunch. Overall, his collection was the best - Chloe had the best dress (the one with the cuts in the back), but she offset that dress with some poofy - puffy dresses that did belong on a Barbie doll. Daniel's stuff didn't have any of Daniel's earlier creativity.
Daniel was great and because of his youth he was being penalized?
He did win 5(?) of the previous Runways - that should get him job anywhere he wants.
Santino should just work for himself - because nothing is as important to him as the sound of his voice.
Chloe's collection was inventive and cohesive, and really stood out in exactly the way that Daniel's did not. And Santino's - while a far cry from his normal over-the-top slop - was droopy and saggy. I hope & expect that all three will have success, but Chloe was the winner for me.
they just had no where to go. But Chloe's collection looked at least like a collection.
Ms. Havrilesky is right on; I agree that Chloe's collection was pretty ghastly, and I was a fan of hers through most of the season. Daniel's collection was sometimes dull but often striking, and I think he would have been a fine winner.
Obvious to everyone who watched with me (and the most disappointing element of last night's show) was the scale of the dick move that Michael Kors and Nina Garcia pulled on Santino, perhaps on behalf of the producers. All season, they urged him to cut down on his whickety-whack, and when he finally does that--and actually creates beautiful garments that don't look like a turkey-on-ice--they come back with, "You played it safe!" Cold, guys. His 1st and 13th pieces were sublime, certainly the best work we've seen him compose. I think the results make it clear that the same forces that kept him alive despite his falling apart, ill-fitting jumpsuit in the makeover challenge kept him from winning the whole thing. Keep him for the "drama" ratings, but don't let him take it under any circumstances.
Additionally, I don't think it's so much that his dresses were ill-fitting; his models simply didn't have breasts. Whoops.
In a competition, the winner is chosen relative to their competitors. You can dismiss Chloe all you want but the fact is, compared to the other collections, her collection was better. All 3 collections were greatly lacking but the decision is still relative to whomever had the best, lacking collection.
I honestly thought Daniel would win given how well he performed throughout PR2 but his collection was incoherent. Where was the military and/or Japanese influence in those bland and beyond boring separates? Not only was their design blah but the muted, pastel colors?? Huh?? That said, I did really like a couple of his designs but overall his collection was lacking. I also thought it was very cool that Kors offered him a job.
Santino's collection could accurately be described as bland, as well, and the judges nailed it, he clearly didn't fit the dresses to the models but to a dress form. The breasts on the models did not fit into where the clothing had them positioned and it was VERY noticeable. I couldn't help but look at the off positioning of the models' breasts as they walked down the runway. I had thought Santino would really go for it but he didn't and that was the major bummer as far as I'm concerned. Maybe that was the judges fault as one of them noted that maybe they had crushed his creative spirit during PR2 by constantly criticizing his designs as too far out. Regardless, as Tim wrote in his blog, don't give it to Santino. Amen.
As for Chloe, I did not like all of her collection or her collection as a whole. Some pieces I loved, like the bright blue dresses, but I think its real significance is she took a risk, (for her), after being so safe all season which is what seemed to impress the judges. That and the fact that her clothes were incredibly well-crafted, didn't hurt her either. Also, actually agreeing with Santino's completely rude comment about her being a good pattern maker versus designer is beyond comprehension. So someone like Chloe who has exceptional sewing skills is a poor designer but someone who consistently has mediocre or poor ones like Santino is a good one? Please.
Chloe may not be the most creative but she's hardly the least, either, and her business sense, skills and professional experience, (you can't argue with judges calling her the most professional), will only help her be successful. I look forward to seeing what she will create with the prize money, she may surprise those of you who question her ability as a designer.
For the record, I thought Kara's runway designs were raggedy, unattractive and dated. She performed poorly during PR2 and I never understood why she didn't get cut earlier, just my personal opinion.
