You are out of your fucking mind, Heather. Have you ever seen Leon speak?
Given a choice between yet another remake and a sitcom cobbled together from what few ideas Larry David had left after his once-fertile brain had been sucked dry by Seinfeld, i will choose to watch an old Peanuts special about the Great Pumpkin.
I haven't seen this season, but there's no question that curb your enthusiasm was once upon a time, at least, a great show and totally hilarious. actually, it was funnier than seinfeld ever was. realistic?? are you joking? seinfeld was completely absurd and less realistic than most Curb episodes. I agree with the previous poster: heather, you are out of your fucking mind. and to the extent that I ever read your column I will certainly give it less credibility. what the matter?? were you offended? there are tons of guys out there- jewish and otherwise- that act that way. you obviously don't get it.
I'm a regular watcher of Curb Your Enthusiasm and think it's perhaps the funniest show on television. The most recent episode ("bare midriff") was hilarious even if some of your comments about Larry's acting are correct.
The whole season that built up to a punchline revolving around "The Producers" was incredible.
Actually, this article is FUNNY! I knew Heather doesn't like much of anything but this kind of proves it.
I must say, that when "Curb Your Enthusiasm" first started, I wasn't too sure about it. But over the years, I have actually grown a taste for it. Matter of fact, I thought this season was particularly funny.
The pissing on the Jesus painting was hysterical.
I am beginning to think that Heather has some serious issues going on. For starters, I don't think disliking everything is a requisite of something that makes a movie or any type of critic particularly astute and insightful, but really just more of a snob. Sorry, Heather, but that's it. Your writing might be interesting in and of itself, but for as for your critiques, well, you're a snob!
I pay for HBO specifically for Curb Your Enthusiasm. I think it's hilarious.
Aren't critics supposed to try to figure out why some people like a hugely popular show, even if they don't? How can you say that a highly rated, highly lauded comedy show is not funny, as if you're the only one who knows something no one else does, without saying why? You don't even make your point well; this column was nearly unreadable. And I'm not trying to be mean.
First you said the show wasn't supposed to be funny, then you said we're supposed to think it's hysterical, then you said it wasn't a comedy...I really couldn't follow you, except you hate the show. But I really don't know why you hate it.
Salon is too earnest, too emphatic, too, I dunno, arrogantly serenely liberal. I bet you hate "Always Sunny" too.
My problem with the premise of the aliens in V (and this is the original series as well) is basically this:
They have crazy powerful technology and city-wide saucers and basically outgun all of humanity by a ridiculous degree. And they... have to resort to subterfuge to get what they want. Instead of just... oh, maybe taking it. Or making deals with some of the less-enlightened nations of the world to take it.
How much you want to bet that Glenn Beck is going to claim that he saw Obama eating a gerbil after the V premiere though? :)
There are certain likes or dislikes that reveal oodles about someone.
That Heather doesn't like Larry David's portrayal of himself hardly surprises as many of the shows she's recently heartily recommended have seemed to me insipid and artificial, overplotted, "witty" but marginal: i.e., The Dollhouse (that's a lo-oong step down from Buffy), Flashforward (the first episode of which she adored, though it was pretty clearly hype and silliness from the start), not to mention Hung, which dwindled quickly to mildly unpleasant pointlessness.
In the end, what it tells me is that if Heather truly is bugged by something, I should at least check it out; whereas if she is over the moon, I liberally sprinkle grains of salt.
What are you trying to do, Heather? Kill your career?
Who ever cannot watch the wonder of this comic genius cannot be real, so if you are an alien it's okay. But every once in awhile it pays to watch what is going on in the mind of Larry David. There is no shortage of situations that are far reaching, canterous, and just plain funny. The Christmas episode hits home for many people who are married to a non-Jewish person as opposed to marrying Catholic. His blunt character will not allow him to "be nice" about such impolite terms that he uses with no guilt, sort of like "Woody Allen" with out the guilt.
That is where the censor would want to bleep, but not Larry. Larry's idea is far more creative for people that would not hesitate themselves to use real names of sex organs, and not think about any one feeling a little wierd. But that is the fun of watching, all the eeehh...what did he just say? and then listen to him say it agian, and again to make sure "we" the viewing audience understand it was not some fruedian slip or something like that. His approach is right on, sort of like "The Sopranos", but with Jewish tones.
Caveat: Its clear art, any art, is in the eye of the beholder. Thus I honor all those who love
"Curb".
For me, I felt it repulsive from the beginning. I tried again this year because of the vaunted "Seinfeld Reunion". I zipped through three seasons. So:
I get it, I get the non PC daring. I get the "black humor", its constant absurdist nature. I get certain high spots, like the finale where Larry pulls off "The Producers".
But I quickly saw that's its ONE JOKE, done relentlessly OVER, and OVER, and OVER, ad nauseum. Larry fights over a nitpicking situation with this one, with that one, with everyone. And he's a greedy, narcissistic shit. How funny. Ha-Ha.
Not. George worked because he was part of an ensemble. His craziness was part of a zany fabric. Would you want to see a show all about George every week? Probably not.
I thought about keeping HBO just for this season's conclusion but the episodes were so lame and the next week fight (of course) at the country club so derivative and monotonously repetitive I couldn't stand it. So no go. Its like watching a guy shit in the middle of a room every week and say, "look, how cutting edge".
For all who like it, have fun. I'm out. I realized why I never dug it in the first place.
