You go girl!

I love it when Heather talks dirty to us!

Oh you sad little man

Have I done anything nice for someone else, yes. But I'm not going to sit here and list them for you.

Also, who the hell said I worshipped these people? I don't even watch her show. Because I turn on the TV I worship sluts? Well I'm pretty sure you spend a lot more time watching TV then I ever have with all your analysis of historical TV.

I'm also pretty sure David Beckham would take great offense at being told he does nothing for society. Shows how little you know.

Please explain how these people are sluts for the simple act of not wearing clothes. Damn all those greek and Italian masterpieces with all those sluts roaming around naked.

Just because you never get laid doesn't mean people who take off their clothes are sluts, I'm pretty sure all my art class nude models would smack you for daring to call what they do slutty or whorish.

Heather look at yourself.

Who's the slut or whore here? Sex workers? Women who make bad marriage choices? Or women who score cheap points making fun of them in the surprisingly regressive Salon reviews?

Please give Pat Robertson my regards Heather. I didn't know that's what Salon had come to.

To answer you, Lestat1...

Why is Denise a slut?

Because she has a great face and body and appeared naked in movies and magazines? Isn't that part of being in a Hollywood film that deals in part with sex? Is Viggo a slut for appearing naked in a couple of his movies?

Is David Beckham a slut for appearing in a sexy ad wearing just his briefs? Is she a slut because she married Charlie Sheen?

Yes. You didn't know?

You, the media, and a bunch of others in America have been worshipping sluts for a long time. You haven't been worshipping anyone who contributes to society in any meaningful way. Have you done anything nice for your mail carrier, your garbage collector, or for that matter your mate for washing your socks?

Sure she may not be that bright, she may make poor dating and marriage choices, but I don't see how that makes her a slut.

I'm just tired of women being called sluts for being naked at some point in their life when millions of people pay to see people naked. We're all interested in seeing attractive people nude and since the naked body isn't shameful, why is a shaming name being applied to someone.

Sure call Denise a crappy actress, someone who's aged passed being the hot chick in a movie so she needs to find a way to get paid so she's doing a reality show. Big whoop, we don't have to watch it. But I'm pretty sure it's hard to get a "normal" job when you were in pretty well known movies and married to a high profile if scummy actor.

Disgusting tagline

I'll admit it -- I didn't even read the damn article. The tagline is all it took to get me over to letters. I don't care how tongue-in-cheek it is, calling these women "sluts" is gross, especially for a publication that seems to consider itself liberal/progressive.

Denise Richards may be annoying, pretty dumb, self-centered and part of yet another reality show I do not care about, but she's also a mother and a daughter and, if the one episode I caught is any indication, pretty much not a "slut."

Which is a disgusting word; can we please ban it?

A reality show next?

How about a reality show next? American TV viewers can thrill to the titillation of rapes, STDs, drug addictions, physical abuses, and even murders that are the actual lot of 99% of prostitutes. Maybe start with a nice sexy season of back stories about the incest and other sexual abuses that lead women to this line of work? And then a season with international flair about prostitutes murdered by the scores in Mexico and Canada. And then a season about how much sexyfun it is to have AIDs, syphilis, chlamydia, genital warts and unwanted pregnancies. Then a season on pimps, with tips on how best to beat up your sex slaves to keep them compliant but still attractive enough for the paying rapists to enjoy. The possibilities are endless!

Not Necessary...

It's really not necessary for Salon to publish articles like hers. We get enough of that TRASH ON 24hr. T.V. Please!!! can we have just one outlet where not subjected to garbage...

Agree with Sally the Werewolf and Moraliste

You two perfectly encapsulated my wandering thoughts. Thank you! I really don't understand what we, the viewing public, are supposed to 'get' out of these faked reality shows. Watching this bimbo driving around in a big SUV? Why? Are we supposed to admire things (cars, furnishings, clothes) that we common slobs can only aspire to? Don't. Get. It. BORING!

Speaking of things I don't get - Doktor Krankheit's blatherings - what the hell was he talking about??? Not asking for an explanation, just....huh?

@TomReedTune

Just don't use the term "pimping out" and you'll be OK.

Whispers, you completely missed the point.

In the mindset of the people bandying around the word "whore" so conveniently these days, being a whore means doing anything you don't want to do for some advantage.

The little boy who doesn't want to wash his hands after peeing, in his own mind, is being forced to do something nasty and offensive to him for the simple reward of not having his mommy kick the crap out of him. He does not see it as an activity that benefits himself. And he doesn't care about other people becoming sick from his germs.

He is self-centered, as are so many adults in this world. He doesn't feel he should do anything his little greasy egotistical heart thinks he should do. Anytime he is forced to do so...he believes he is being a whore.

The phrases defining this cultural conceit are so common in our society. "Taxes are for the little people." "Fighting in wars is for ignorant country boys and blacks." "I'll use as much damn gas as I want, and screw your global warming." And from the recently deceased Tim Russert, when asked why he sucked up to Republicans and heavily attacked Democrats: "Integrity is for paupers."

I did not create this definition of "whore." American culture did. And it is so commonly accepted, it's become so integral to our culture, that I can't argue with Havrilesky's employment of the phrase. I just think it's a pity she doesn't have the capacity to discuss this cultural paradigm change in her writing.
