I Like to Watch

Guilt looms as the fall season hangs in the balance: Will "Veronica Mars" return? Can a sick "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff be cured?

The letters thread is now closed.

Oooo goody! I get to be first!

1. Ellen Pompeo has a face like a monkey -- A pitiful one at that.

2. Patrick Dempsey is gross looking from any side angle. He has no chin. He has a hook nose and never seems to breath through it because his mouth is usually hanging open. McDreamy? Every woman I know thinks the bastard ought to at least shave. Grey must have road rash on her upper thighs.

3. Sandra Oh is BUTT UGLY! Her acting? A perpetual look of surprise. That's it.

4. Katherine Heigl is the ONLY reason to watch this stupid show.

5. T.R. Knight's character "George The Melancholy Puppy" is getting damned old. He must be gay: Any straight guy would be humping Izzie like there's no tomorrow.

6. Isaiah Washington is at his best when he has no dialog. What will become of his character, Dr. Burke? Maybe he'll start screwing Dr. Bailey! After all, the show's producers are starting to run out of permutations. Izzie on George, George on his wife, his wife on McSteamy, McSteamy on Dr. Shepard, Dr. Shepard on McDreamy, Dr. Shepard on Alex, Alex on Izzie,

This show will end when everybody has fucked everybody at least three times.

Men Are From Mars, Veronica Is From Heaven

Heather, thanks for writing about VERONICA MARS, which is the best show not airing on HBO or SHOWTIME. I'm not in the CW's desired demographic and until this season I never even watched it. It was a NETFLIX recommendation, and they were spot on. When I saw the first few episodes on DVD, it was like drinking from the Fountain of Youth. I was absolutely mesmerized by the look of the show, the whipsmart dialogue, and of course the drop-dead gorgeous star, Kristen Bell. Veronica Mars is the coolest female character in the history of television, with the possible exception of Emma Peel. There, I just proved I'm too old to be enjoying VM as much as I do.

I'm going to send the decision makers a postcard this week, urging them to pick it up. My preference would be to continue with the current format, but the F.B.I. scenario would be O.K. also. I don't agree with Heather that college is less interesting than high school. I'm glad they are allowing the characters to mature. If VERONICA MARS has slipped, and I don't think it has, it's because it's just too hard to write a twenty-two episode season. The main reason why HBO, Showtime, Canadian and British television are superior to American network T.V. is because they only have to produce about twelve shows. Sometimes less is more.

One more thing, here's a pre-emptive screw you, to that himbo who keeps criticizing Heather's column. It's great, keep up the good work.

Doomed...

I thought Traveler was cool too... way back in the Fall of 2006 when it received glowing reviews on several TV sites. I'm skeptical of new TV shows, but I put this one on my "check it out" list.

Then it disappeared. "It's coming at mid-season, for sure". Then it disappeared again. There were rumors of rewrites and other problems. And now it's being dumped in the "summer season", with almost no promotion. Doomed, doomed, doomed.

If I'm wrong and Traveler turns into a hit, then I'll have to catch it on DVD.

TV networks, you've dumped me too many times. You tease me and tempt me, and then, just as I've started to build up a little affection, you dump me. I like network TV. I'm just not "edgy" enough for those violent, harsh cable shows. But I'm beginning to wonder, are you worth my time and effort? Or should I dump you once and for all?

Garry Owen Speaks the Trust

i normally don't skip much of this column but i literally could not read a single word about Grey's Anatomy. i hope Heather doesn't write about this show just because it's popular.

Maybe some day i will watch Veronica Mars. Initially i was so opposed to Friday Night Lights (because of the franchise and terrible movie) but now it is one of my favorite shows.

Veronica Love

I'm still mad at CW for the whoring sea donkey (good name, btw) show-- I was totally in my Veronica groove until the two month hiatus, and now I'm two weeks behind. I also feel that the 2nd story arc-- though the death was an interesting premise-- totally let me down. I feel the LoVe, but they kept the on-again, off-again going on too long. I still don't think the third season's a total bust... I'm not loving the idea of fast forwarding the series either, for all its need to awkwardly re-introduce key characters, but I dearly hope it gets picked up for a 4th season regardless.

Grey's Anatomy was fun and tolerable for a year. Now I can barely stand watching a second of it.

And "Private Practice" is a terrible title.

I plan on watching the BBC next year. And Bones. Why don't you ever talk about Bones?

Kay W, "Traveller" was cool back in 1967.

It was called Coronet Blue back then, and it had a young college-age guy running for his life from mystery men. The guy had amnesia, and the only thing he could remember was "Coronet Blue," which supposedly had some significance. It was an American pretender to some of the aura and paranoia of The Prisoner.

Since 1967, the show got dumbed down. Let's see if there's someone we can care about in this show. There are two rich yuppie kids with no smarts, Eddie Bauer clothing and at least one corrupt rich dad, and massive pretensions of competence. (No wonder Havrilesky identifies with them.) They get framed by a terrorist for blowing up a museum and killing a bunch of people.

The Homeland Security types go after the retarded kids, but can't even contain them in Manhattan. The FBI agent who captures one and holds a gun on him is too stupid to shoot off his kneecaps right away, so he can be cuffed and waterboarded later. The only way she could keep her job in the real world would be if she was appointed by Gonzales.

The kids get mysterious help from the old black hotel custodian, who is clearly with the CIA or the terrorists or something. In the end one of the spongehead's dads promises help, but then speaks to a guy in shadows who is clearly with one of the factions. Who? They won't tell, because in badly-plotted series like this, raising a bunch of unconsidered questions and indeterminate characters makes your show seem "deep."

This is Coronet Blue with a lot more smoke and mirrors, out-of-focus loyalties and reduced violence. (At least in the 1960's, the FBI and secret agents killed people. Nobody in 2007 television series would dare, no matter how many failures-as-human-beings deserve it.) And the retarded dudes will keep running in their freshly-pressed Havrilesky-level plush sportsclothes no matter how desperate their situation is supposed to be, because unlike the 1967 version, this show is based on product placement. Given ABC's current level of desperation in finding action hours, I'm guessing it will last through the summer, no more. Maybe it'll be kept after summer as a cheap replacement when this fall's crop of awful hour dramas start to die.
