  • Expand your horizons a bit.

There's plenty to watch on TV:

  • Bored are you?

    1. if you can't find something on extended cable, PBS, Create, to entertain and enlighten you then woe be u. Seriously. For Christ's sake read a book. Talk to your sig. other. Stop the f..en whinning.

    2. When passing through channels and coming up to the noxious Trump and his equally stinko contestants I'm struck by a few things too:

    a. can Trump possibly fill himself up with another ounce of hot air?

    b. would I rather die in hot oil than to hire any of those loathsum, untalented creatures he selects for contestants..

Ohmygod. If that is the creame de le creame of what passes for managerial talent,..... "earth to donald....earth to donald....God is dead"

  • You're right David, I do agree

TV is the one thing we have in common, and I agree with Tom Reed - there's nothing laudatory in proclaiming you don't own/don't watch television. My problem has more to do with the fact that week after week he comes on here to attack Havrilesky personally and spout off a handful of television trivia nuggets that have little or nothing to do with the shows being reviewed. I can't remember a single constructive thing he's ever said in favor of or against the shows in question.

  • To Maldoror

    Thank you, just thank you.

  • We get it we get it we get it we get it

The only thing worthwhile to watch are

    The Wire

    BSG

So why do you still have a column?

  • Hey, it's just like The Fisher King!

Remember near the end of The Fisher King, Jeff Bridges' character is offered a role in a new sitcom about homeless people?

It's coming. You just watch out. Richard Dawson knew the future when he made "The Running Man," he just didn't know it was going to be called "Survivor."

This is the same. How long is it before somebody approaches Terry Gilliam with an option agreement for "Home Free"? Of course, he probably won't sign it.

But then he dies - mysteriously - in a car crash, and his estate signs off on it, and it becomes the most commercially successful enterprise he was ever involved in.

Or not. I hope not. But I get nervous. And when I read about the antics of yuppies on "The Apprentice," I get more nervous.

  • Television

I'm with RachelAnne on this. I read Heather Havrilesky for her prose. I tap my husband on the shoulder while reading some of the funniest or sharp edged bits and share. I also rarely watch network television because I really just don't find the programming entertaining. "Reality" TV? Who's reality? Who are these people? They are not anyone I am related to, walk my dogs with, share tomato plants or rose of sharon cuttings with...

Every now and then I've tried a tv program out because it got a good review but...why do these tv types think that we want more soap operas in space or over-sexed hospital staff? Don't they realize why Star Trek is the amazing phenomenon it is? Why M.A.S.H. could even distract us from finals week back in colleg? House is great but I keep waiting for some butthead in tvland to cancel it because it is not bringing in some demographic I've never met.

Thank heavens and real reality that Mythbusters and Dirty Jobs give me a decent break (used to fold the laundry or file) from my oppressed white person lifestyle...:)

  • How to draw the knee-jerk 'jerks' out into the open.Brava!

I wonder what some of these people are expecting when they open up HH's articles. Are they hoping for some details of a (sexually)voyeuristic nature?(No wonder they are so critical.Abject disappointment,no doubt).Ha

when I lived in france,(The Loire valley)we had lots of channels to flip through. What passed for entertainment would have made HH lick her chops in anticipation. (The dubbed US sitcoms were a huge howl). The stuff generated ala Francaise ,well I'm not sure what it was meant to be,but it was never boring.(De trop).

    Old farts complaining.What a surprize.(imus-like?baloney).

HH,we don't have a child to help around the house. We do have a bitch that help's out.Our black lab, sheila. She loves the swiffer and is a fool for martha S.and her crockpot.

  • HH is an illegal alien and I can prove it.

She is doing the kind of difficult, thankless work that ordinary Americans refuse, or feel is somehow beneath them. For example, I would rather gouge out my own eyes with an ice cream scoop than spend a few minutes with "The Donald" and his horrifying collection of odious toadies, but I do feel that it's important to keep up with their pending crimes against humanity and affronts to human decency. Muchos gracias, senora Havrilesky!

The husband no doubt works the graveyard shift at one of those "chicken factories, or chicken pluckin' factories" that the President was recently telling us about. Hey, someone's gotta do it. And that blessed baby seems to have inherited the same can-do (or "must-do," in this case) spirit and back-breaking zeal to live the American dream.

On behalf of the grateful but distracted citizens of these United States, we extend our thanks to you and your charming, quaint family!

p.s. why did NBC dump Andy Barker?

  • homeless

the homeless thing on the last episode of the apprentice bothered me, too. in today's economy, anyone can be put into that situation. it's like kicking someone when he's down -- which i guess is what makes it easy to make fun of the "marginal" members of society; it's hard to find the energy to fight back against prejudice when you're already fighting to stay warm or whatever.

at least the production was so half-ass that it wasn't at all clear that person in the next bed was supposed to be homeless. i wonder who would win in a battle: season 1's final four (kwame bill amy and nick) and this season's?

  • HUZZAH

Thanks for the mild rant on the dearth of watchable teevee, Heather. All the more reason to agitate for more Deadwood. Any news on the movies promised by HBO?
