GandyGirl...
"I can't make heads or tails of it. I'm left with the conclusion that the paragraph actually makes no sense."
You must be a cheerleader. Or a Texan.
Seriously though, Tom was just saying that he thinks its hard for people to get emotionally involved with characters who are football players (which is why no one watches the NFL). Most of his opinion seems to stem from the fact that he was beaten up by a bully who happened to be a football player. Or couldn't get a date with a cheerleader. But I digress.
The Texas kids left behind was a reference to George Bush being a Texan and his "No Child Left Behind" program which, despite its absolutist name, actually does leave some kids behind and has never been fully funded. Really, this isn't rocket science.
Either way, the statement was to the effect that you "Impassioned Plea" girl shouldn't like the show because no one else does. I say you like it as much as you want until its gone. Just stop trying to convert me because I, much like Tom, can't stand football players. Or the careers they go into after not going into the NFL: like soldier, policeman, or security guard. Its not that I don't appreciate the (mostly) fine job these people do, its just the whole "Hoo-Rah", black & white, good vs. evil mentality is beyond my understanding or tolerance.
And I was beaten up in high school as well. Except it was by a wrestler: think football player X10 with alot of irrational crazy on top!

It's good to know the background before making catty remarks
However, I didn't care for her tone earlier on and am not surprised she finds herself sitting at home alone watching The Bachelor and pining for some dreamy military doctor.
Here's some advice for you Heather: You might actually get to enjoy some companionship in real life, and may eventually find a guy/gal who can be both considerate and masculine if you get over yourself, and stop looking to demean the gender at every turn.
I don't think she's got a whole lot of time to pine just now, considering that she and her husband had a baby a few months ago. That tends to keep you pretty busy.

Jonathan, Nielsen begs to differ
(which is why no one watches the NFL).
Nielsen begs to differ.

Or did you mess up the acronym and mean to type FNL for Friday Night Lights?

thanks, jonathan...
Being neither a Texan nor a cheerleader (as clearly illustrated by the way I described myself in my original "impassioned plea" letter), let me just say that the show is about more than just football. It's about relationships and families. And it's a lot more compelling than Prison Break or 24.
Further, I went to an all girl's high school in Philadelphia. Not many Texans, cheerleaders, wrestlers, or football players there and somehow I still manage to find value in the show.
And of course it's not rocket science. Little aside from actual rocket science is.
I could go on to explain why I think Tom's comments make little sense, but perhaps you are right. Plea as I might, I think I'll just enjoy this week's finale and keep my big yap shut.
It's just that it bugs me that well-written and acted shows just don't do well (see Arrested Development, Freaks and Geeks) yet shows like 7th Heaven run for 10 years.
Why am I still talking?

I'm with you, gandygirl...
If I had a dollar for every great show FOX cancelled, I could buy a decent surround sound system.
Anonymous: that was a rarely used rhetorical device known as sarcasm which, unfortunately, doesn't translate well into print. But its all I got...

My Comments on Comments
Ms. Havrilesky's playful jabs at men's intelligence and the size/functioning of their brains strikes me as ironic.
It is ironic. You're taking her way too seriously.
still can't decipher Tom's last paragraph
Don't waste your time.
"Tomredtoon" is just this weeks incarnation.
He's here every week. He's apparently on a personal crusade to slam Heather every chance he gets for the sin of being a better writer than he is.

Sea Donkeys
What is the definition of a 'sea donkey' and what makes a sea donkey become a 'sea donkerella'?

donkarella
After exhausting all the shows I cared to see on nbc.com, and perhaps giving Andy Barker P.I. more consideration than it deserved, I gave Friday Night Lights a chance.
It has incredible dramatic pace. Of course, that may be because I couldn't stop watching episode after episode. By the end of the marathon, face damp with tears, I marveled at how long the show diverted my thoughts from their usual occupation: asscheeks.
Thanks for not mentioning Andy Griffith. If some readers had it their way, your article would be an excel spreadsheet. The history of television may be entertaining for the few people that have seen every television program produced, but a more interesting discussion would be the development of the word "donkarella" over the run of this reliably entertaining COLUMN.
