Bad tv in the summer
I thought the bad tv was good this summer. I watched every episode of The 4400, The Closer, and Saved.
I like reading Heather Havrilesky, but she just doesn't know good, bad tv.

Funny
Hilarious writing. The whole article has that giddy, slap-happy quality that reminds me of Bill Simmons (ESPN's "The Sportsguy") at his best: i.e., writing on the NBA.
Two things:
1) Battlestar Galactica does not deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as The Wire.
That said, all the effusive critical praise I've seen lately for The Wire seems to do it a disservice -- it makes it seem too high-brow and difficult.
It IS weird and relatable and human, and somehow constantly entertaining without any sacrifice to its canny realism. I don't know anyone except prudes who wouldn't like The Wire if they gave it a chance. It's just a great show, full of life. In its wide canvas, it's got something for everybody.
2) I don't know anyone who watched Rockstar: Supernova (or Rockstar: INXS, for that matter) who didn't LOVE it, at least in a guilty pleasure sort of way. It's just awesome. Good tunes, great characters, lots of absurdity.
Storm Large is the next stage in human evolution. Make HER a character on Battlestar Galactica -- and, then, non-nerds might have a reason to watch. Let's give her her own variety show, or channel, or something. (I love the fact that all the praise and fame that will be coming her way won't give her a big head.)
p.s. -- Ryan Starr -- you'll remember him at some odd moment years from now and laugh hysterically.

ABC Boycott
I've got my own one man boycott going against ABC/Disney. As I channel serf I just click past the ABC and ABC Family channels. I just wish shows like Grey's Anatomy would move to other networks or cable.

Torso Happy
Can we get a review without alluding to bare bodies and torsos? What does that have to do with impending doom?
Who cares about some actor's torso unless the reviewer is married to some overweight slob?

Season two explosions
If Jericho can survive its first season then I suggest a dusty and dishevelled yet glamorous Joan Collins arrive intown after escaping the disaster in Denver. She could supply the type of explosions people really want to see.

Meta leta
tomcatv1: "channel serf" I don't know if that was deliberate, but it was good.
Eagle: I care. In fact, I'd like to see the torso speculation level raised if possible. The nice thing about television is that everybody, except for the comic relief fat guy, is totally ripped.
Who knew Heather was secretly a big nerd? Lawful evil indeed.

Bush and Repubs Will Never Support Education
All of America's schools will be neglected because that stupid 'No Child Left Behind Program' is a totally phony Bush/Rove/Repub program that was never designed to actually accomplish anything other than to intimidate teachers just as Reagan intimidated the air traffic controllers in order to break their union and all unions.
Bush cares nothing at all about pro-life if he did he would see that America's families get a living wage, proper health care anda good education for ALL, ALL, ALL children. But no republican will ever do that because it is in direct opposition to the tenets of the Republican party. Their conservative agenda is absolutely against it.
The conservative agenda of not investing anything in the American people and their families will one day reveal itself to be the downfall of America. 'We the people' are America, NOT the Bush family, the corporations, the wealthy or the conservative republican party.
One example of this conservative republican non-investment in America, we all know that the Small Business Administration is to help small businesses. But the top recipients of funds from the SBA includes Microsoft, and that is an outrage and a criminal misuse of our tax dollars.
Bill and Melinda Gates will never be able to do enough charity work to compensate for that. Also, are they really spending their money on their charity work or the money of the American taxpayer.

The Wire's Most Ringing Endorsement
I'd been a fan of the show since the beginning of the second season. I was fortunate enough to be stuck home one weekend with a bad cold and HBO OnDemand. I watched the entire first season straight through and was extremely frustrated when I could only watch three episodes of the second. Of all the shows I've been a devoted fan, includikng Six Feet Under, Carnivale & Deadwood, none has truly gripped me as much as The Wire and none of those have I rewatched as often.
The most ringing endorsement I ever heard of the show came from an actual low-level stree-thug drug dealer I happened to strike up a conversation with in NYC. We both loved the show for the same reasons, and he was just as taken aback as I was in the writers' ability to show the true nature of crime and punishment in a major U.S. city, along with all the messy connections, ironies and motivations that the 'good' guys and 'bad' guys are entangled in.
If you love the show, keep watching, and make sure that HBO gives Simon the fifth season he deserves. He has always had a five season arc in mind, the first dealing directly with the drug trade, the second with the death of the working class and it's intersection with more criminal elements, the third with politics, fourth is education and the fifth will zero in on the media.

The glaring innacuracy of Jericho irks me
Take a look at the iconic shot of the guy watching the mushroom cloud. Take it from someone who grew up in Denver and has driven through Kansas several times, you cannot see the Rockies anywhere in Kansas. The cloud appears to be on the opposite side of the mountains as well, where as Denver is just east of the mountains, i.e. between Kansas and the Rockies.

The Wire - 5th Season
Beedee - The Wire has been renewed for a 5th season. It was just announced a few days ago.
Now if only it receives a much deserved Emmy nod next year.
