Well, David, back in January of this year, first-year associate salaries in New York City in BigLaw went up to $160,000, from $145,000.
Here's an article discussing this phenomenon: http://www.law.com/jsp/article.jsp?id=1169473050076
I am not an hourly employee: I get an annual salary (see above), plus bonus, which is around $35,000, for a total of $195,000. We sure do work a lot, I will be the first to admit, and we don't get paid any overtime.
General Petraeus is rank O-10, with over 30 years of experience, which gives him 15,234.00 per month, which equals to $182,808. Now, I'll admit that he probably gets some sort of hazard pay, maybe he has lower taxes or something, but I still think that that is absurd.

A senator, incidentally, earns $162,000.
Would I rather be an associate in a law firm or General Petraeus? hahaha. I imagine he works many, many hours.
