recounts have never shifted a win from a presumed winner in the united states in an election for national government - and 99% of the recounts added votes to the presumed winner. so you dont have to worry.

for instance last year in an election with the same turnout in virginia for attorney general the presumed winner was ahead by 3,000 votes - after the recount the presumed winner gained a total of 27 votes meanwhile the challenger gained zero votes.

"I can't blame Reid too much

I didn't think we'd take the Senate, either. I'm still not positive we will. A lot can happen during recounts when Republicans are in charge. I predicted that we would lose the Senate and gain the House, but by a small margin. Never have I been so happy to be proven wrong.

  • where is he when we need him...

Why wasn't Howard Dean screaming and shouting and screaming some more on TV last night? Why not, it should've been played everytime a GOP seat jumped.

Andrew, I watched Fox for a bit last night too and the mood was so heavy and mindnumbing and it was obvious that the GOP had accepted the defeat and I knew that America was doing the right thing in the last 6 years.

  • AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

I can just here Milan's voice in my head, while trying to put Dennis Hastert and Rick Santorum to the ground...in a calum submissive state....That's the funniest shit I've read all day...the only thing that made me laugh louder was seeing that picture of Santorum's daughter wiping tears from her face as her whiddle-daddy gave his concession speech in the background. It was like watching a kid cry over having their candy stolen after Halloween...I laughed until my guts were bleeding...

Yeah, I know, real mature for a middle-aged man to say that...but it's a joke that has been 6 years in the making, and if the punch-line of this election is going to be seeing the face of a Republican candidate's child crying, then I'm gonna laugh and enjoy every freaking minute of it until Jan. 2007!

Well, I guess she learned a life lesson today...everybody gets what they deserve, especially asshole, moralistic parents that would rather enslave homosexuals than try to treat them as human beings...

Sorry kid, dems the breaks...haha, get it? "Dems?" Haha...

  • O'Hehir media piece

Dear Mr. O'Hehir: Since I don't watch Fox ever, I defer to your judgment here, particularly about McCain. That piece showed up elsewhere, and he looked embalmed. I wish you had touched on some of the other coverage. CNN was particularly awful. They gave what seemed like hours of time to Candy Crowley and John King and their spin, instead of allowing Begala and Carville more air time. Carville and Begala are admittedly partisan too, but they actually had real news to report. JC Watt was ok, but seemed to be in some sort of terrible back pain. Anyway, I hope bloggers and online zines will be more aggressive in critiquing the "conservative" as opposed to "liberal" media bias as we head into a new era. It's time for a change. Many thanks for your work. I always enjoy it.

  • Fuxxsnooze

Dogstyle Santorum's gone. Rumsfailed is gone. Pombo is gone. Macaca Allen's gone. Welcome back, America. I feared you had gone permanently to the dark side. Par-tay!

  • Nice

This was a really great piece of writing; incisive and well written...and funny! Thanks for a great little slice of America on Election Night 2006.

  • Re: Van Souther

How true, Van. Republicans don't threaten to emigrate, they just go home and choke their mistresses.

  • Haven't heard from Joe yet

What do you know! Seems most of the country want to be progressives now. (Stupid f**king progressives of course). Bring us back to reality with a somber statement about how this is really a victory for dear leader. Excoriate the MSM and Hillary Clinton for making a fine man like Don Rumsfeld lose his job. (Saw him at the intersection today with a cardboard sign, "Will invade for food"). Yeah, so the democrats took congress; What about Chappaquidick and Lewinsky!?! Joe, joe, your country needs you.

  • great writing, Andrew

a joy to read. I'm still smiling. Content and craft.

  • The Best Party Was On MSNBC

Watching Matthews whine and lament every Republican who got the ax while Olberman could barely contain his glee was priceless. I thought that Matthews was gonna weep and that Olberman was gonna piss on his shoes.

    Friggin awesome!

  • Democracy

    Harry Truman once said :

"The American people can always see through a counterfeit. It sometimes takes a little time, but eventually they can always spot one."

I've been so happy today. I didn't do much work - too excited. I celebrated by running out over the lunch hour and buying an American flag. I believe again.

  • Excellent article

    Fantastic reading...

What is lost in all the right-wing bluster about how the Democrats should've picked up even more seats if history is any barometer, and about how this six-year changeover was to be expected?

What is lost is the fact that Republicans over the past several years spent a lot of time and energy to redistrict areas all over the US that would favor their "permanent majority." When you factor that in, along with the fact that there is a whole right-wing television "news" channel that has the highest ratings of the all-news channels (slipping, but still the highest), plus the fact that talk radio is completely dominated by right-wingers, it is nothing short of a miracle that the Democrats had such an excellent net show this cycle. Nothing short of a miracle.

I am so proud of America. This is the closest we have come to zero-oversight fascism in my lifetime, and America stood up in a big way yesterday and decided enough is enough. We're ready to stop our post-9/11 confusion, doubt, and self-destruction and rejoin the global community. We're ready to start treating ourselves like civilized members of society again...

Or at least that's the plan.

The Democrats had better not let us down now. People should be held accountable for what they have done, but America will have a very low tolerance for endless hearings. We've ben down that road before. Governmental reform and straightening out our foreign policy should be the #1 and #2 concerns, not necessarily in that order, and the hearings should not overshadow this. I will take Pelosi at her word that impeachment is off the table. Sure, I'd love to see this guy go down, but it's more important that America sees that there is really a true difference between the two parties. That means being graceful in victory.

America did not vote for Democrats, they voted for CHANGE. Let's give them a reason to VOTE DEMOCRAT in another two years.
