Letters to the Editor

Letters posted here are associated with the following article:
Monday: "Top Gun"-style montages and heartfelt profiles of the crew tell the story of the nuclear-powered USS Nimitz in "Carrier." Plus: What did you think of "Battlestar Galactica" on Friday?

  • Battlestar Galatica

This season has been a huuuuuge disappointment so far. I've had my fill of Starbuck's histrionics. It would have been better if that character had really died.

Why hasn't Baltar been whacked yet? Turning him into some sort of prophet is just stupid. This is the guy who betrayed humanity to the fracking Cylons and also gave #6 a nuclear weapon.

I don't know where they're going with the final 5, but I'm not feeling that sub-plot at all. The only thing I'm liking is the Cylon civil war.

The 'Razor' movie was fantastic but I feel Ronald Moore has completly lost the plot on the finale. I hope to be proven wrong but it's looking like the final season will be a fiasco.

  • Agreemsg

I feel like the only two things we're waiting for are: who is the final cylon, and will they get to earth. I'm worried the final cylon, as with the other four, will be a capricious choice and while probably initially shocking/exciting/provoking, it will end up being a big "WTF?"

BTW, are the final 5 supposed to be one-off models with no resurrection possible?

The only emotional hit for me so far this season was watching Cally die. That hit me hard.

  • With This The Horror Fades Into the Background

[Why close the letters to the article 'Carrier' (are there more than one? -- then the first one)? Why close 'letters' at all?]

I agree with 'AustinEngineer' in the first letters section.

Public TV has no business romanticizing warships which send out bombers to kill people (who are civilians for the most part).

I object to Heather Havrilesky (a good reviewer) touting -- giving such play to -- aircraft carriers.

These articles, as well as this series, makes people feel this is just ordinary business as usual. It is hard therefore to let the horror and madness of it emerge from the personal stories and the awesomeness of 'high technology' -- NUCLEAR power for god's sake.

Does the series (which I am not going to watch) mention in depth the bombs an aircraft carrier must carry? Does it mention in depth the feelings personnel of these ships have about having sent out -- or having flown out -- aircraft which have dropped bombs on human beings? Do they imagine the destruction to families, to bodies, to children? To homes and neighborhoods? To a community's feeling of safety forever? Has everybody gone crazy to write this article without saying all this, instead just talking around it?

It is this kind of article and TV series which amounts to a recruiting tool for the airforce or navy. Do you take responsibility for the harm which will be caused by your having done this? (How?)

  • BSG -- @Patrick Glanville

    Patrick,

Wow. Couldn't disagree more. I felt like the show got completely off track around the middle of last season -- mostly because it was all wrapped up in the Apollo-Starbuck-Anders-Dualla soap opera, about which I could not possibly have cared less. This year, it's got me glued to my chair. I'm enjoying the Starbuck-as-Ahab subplot, Baltar is actually interesting again, and even Lee seems bearable.

De gustibus non disputatum, I suppose.

  • I trust them

So far, BSG has been terrific. This year is a little different, but the writers have done such a good job getting us here I'm inclined to follow them wherever they're taking us.

Besides, it's like sex or pizza: even when it's bad it's still pretty good.

    I agree - Cally's death was quite a jolt.
