Learning from Senegal

It's very encouraging to read this interview with Youssou N'Dour depicting a positive view of Africa. I've had the opportunity to visit Senegal (to create a photo project called "Dunya in Dakar"), and I very much agree with him when he says that we have something to learn from the African way of life.

Two proverbs I learned in Dakar which have stuck with me speak to both the Senegalese joie de vivre and the importance of dignity, in particular as relates to charity:

"You do not have the right to have a closed heart."

"The manner of giving is more important than that which is given."

There's so much more to Africa than disaster, and hopefully that truth will continue to be represented in the media.

Thanks again for publishing Larry Blumenfeld's interview.
