Saw an advanced showing of it and found it kind of ..... meh.
You don't have to be a psychiatrist to figure that one out.
how about removing those Salon personals from the front page? A "Loser" link at the top might work.
A.) Again with the commas? Jesus. You just can't write, dear.
B.) Is Salon so completely NY-centric that it does film reviews of movies that are showing in literally THREE theaters?
If you're going to be such navel gazers, why not do restaurant reviews of what you cooked up in your own kitchen last night?
Stephanie's review really makes me want to see this movie now! The movie's title makes me laugh. It has a knowing, winky obviousness without beating you over the head with how clever it is. In the trailer it looks like Mary Woronov is channeling Karen Black circa "Burnt Offerings". I'm there. I can always count on Stephanie to get me excited about going to the movies whether it's an entertaining low-brow picture or an entertaining high-brow one. Thanks.
Thanks for this review - I'd definitely be checking this out. Strangely though, it does not appear to be playing in Toronto. It premiered back in July at the Fantasia film festival, but doesn't seem to be playing anywhere now. Sigh. It will come here, because everything does, but Halloween seems like the perfect release time.
Yes on the first half of the sentence, but...who is this "we" you speak of? I myself am fed up with the endless conveyor belt of shit that passes for horror film entertainment in this country. Were it not for the inspiration of the Japanese, there would not have been a decent horror film made in this country since Zack Snyder's remake of Dawn of the Dead.
She said we "want" to fall for them, not that we do.
JJ Abrams is the greatest film maker in the universe.
*emits deep atavistic growl in back of throat*
She is one unbelievably sexy woman. I'll definitely want to see this one on DVD, just for her!
If you thought the Dawn of the Dead remake was a great horror film I would suggest that perhaps you're not really that jaded by genre conventions yet. Go check on the other guy's (O'Hehir) list of decent horror movies from the last few years. IMHO it's hit and miss, but there's at least a couple movies on there that are better than Dawn of the Dead.
anything as creepy as the 1922 Nosferatu. Being a silent picture and made so long ago, it is short on special effects but the portrayal of the vampire is nothing short of brilliant. Max Schreck is as close to the real thing as any human could be. I was so taken with the portrayal that I couldn't go to sleep until I had checked the internet to make sure he was a bona fide human and had actually passed away (1936). I just felt that I was watching the real thing.
Or perhaps Dick Cheney's gun barn?
