With her directorial debut, Drew Barrymore gets by on a skate and a smile

That is why you need a good editor

As long as enough film is shot and the performances are decent, a good editor can save a movie.

Maybe she went for realism

Even though one of the characters takes care to explain the rules of the sport, it's sometimes hard to tell who's coming from where, or who's winning and why.

Having watched a few matches myself, I rarely knew who was winning or why. Something about the skater with the star on her helmet passing the skaters from the other team...but it seemed like the refs were just guessing how many people got passed.

Another Roller Derby flick

Am I the only one who remembers the classic Raquel Welch flick "Kansas City Bomber?"

@redhatter - Kansas City Bomber is a blast from the past

Unfortunately, I do not have it in my collection. I will have to watch "Mother, Jugs & Speed" instead. I do have Rollberball though.

In other words....

Girl Power !

@redhatter - Kansas City Bomber

Ugh. That movie is not only an incredible downer, but a bore. I remember renting the movie as derby was first making a splash a few years ago, and it was just so deeply serious and unfun, but without the substance it seemed to be thinking that it had.

I'm so, so hoping this movie is merely enjoyable. I don't expect any Oscars, but hopefully it will be a good time.

Um... that sounds exactly like roller derby to me.

A note about the reviewer.

If someone out there is teaching a class on how to write great movie reviews, they should compile the reviews written by Stephanie Zacharek and use them as their text. I am convinced that there is no one doing a better job of reviewing movies today and I really think that Stephanie ranks up there with the very best I've ever read. She is the only reviewer going who can compel me to read a review of a movie in which I have absolutely no interest, just to read her writing. (Not referring to this one.)

Bravisimo Stephanie! Both of your reviews today are outstanding. I don't know if I'll enjoy the movies, but I'm giving you a standing ovation.

movie review

I was gonna resist commenting on this reviewer til that last comment came up. I am still bent out of shape about the horrible and unfair review of capitalism and several other movies here. This review has not changed my mind except to convince me that Stephanie will look past a manufactured unoriginal campy plot if she "likes" the director or if Ellen Page is in it. ( I don't mean this in a rude way but I know nothing about Stephanie but is she gay?) I have yet to see her give a worthy movie a great review and in many , like Micheal Moore's recent movie, she seems to be reviewing the person directing rather than the movie. I am willing to bet that is what is going on here. Stephanie like the vast majority of women just loves Drew Barrymore's Grrrlpower and reviewed that instead of the movie. Writing is all fine and dandy but if I wanted to find oblique reviews of famous people there are other ways than reading movie reviews. I once again would like Salon to consider hiring someone else to do this job. Perhaps someone who can be entertaining as well as rational about film reviewing.
