would come out just when Israeli is killing Palestinians by the thousand -- how remarkable is that? Beating that ol' Holocaust(tm) drum just when Israel needs to distract people's attention from what they're doing.
It is just so, so incredibly that this movie would come out at this time. It's an amazing coincidence.
Just one of those things I guess. You betcha.
You must be dense as a rock. The official editorial policy of Salon is now all Jewhate all the time. Everything from global warming to a lost dog is an evil Jew plot. Why do you imagine that Gordon is given free reign yet anyone who questions Glenn Greenwald, Gary Kamiya or whomever wrote todays' TWO screeds and all the people who comment on them by the hundreds is deleted and banned?
Peter antisemitism is what you think it looks like. If it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck, it's a duck. A little nazi duck. Don't be confused - - Salon likes its Jews ducking the Holocaust or portrayed as weak helpless and saccharine. Everything else, mind you is part of some evil massive Jew plot against the world.
Dear me even Hitler wanted to have a Jewish museum as a testament to his final solution. Salon, Gary, Gordon, Glenn and all the others are creating their own little one right here.
I just feel exhausted.
"Never again" has lost all meaning.
So why bother?
Regardless, I'm half tempted to see this film just because of Daniel Craig. However, I just saw "Come and See" on Youtube, and I have to admit that even though it's a blaitantly pro-Soviet film, it's probably a better depiction of the partisan fighting on the Russian Front than "Defiance" ever can be. And I know for a fact that "Defiance" has gotten a little flack in Europe over how it handled the dicey subject of a civilian massacre that took place at the hands of the Bielski Bros. Gang...main because they neglect to even mention it in the film. Which is a shame, because that's a PERFECT situation where conflicting moral issues could have been depicted...and a great actor like Daniel Craig would have chewed that up!
In fact, I think that's the bigger issue I have with most films about these kinds of topics: the inability to at least attempt to address issues of moral ambiguity. For example (and I KNOW this will rain on Gordo's parade, but tough shit)...Schindler's List works as a film because it shows Oscar Schindler going through a moral metamorphosis. He starts as a wartime profiteer building a finacial empire on the backs of Jewish slave-labor, but he decides in the end to give it all up to save the lives of his employees. See, that's shear cinematic GEEEENNNIUSSSS!!! If every director and screenwriter could pull something like that off when they discussed these delicate issues of the meaning of life in this horrible world we live in, then Hollywood would be a lot better off than it is now. But no, these greater concepts get lost in big-budget productions. Thank Christ some actors at least recognize this, and do the best they can with what they have.
Which again leads me back to the reason I probably will still see this film...without Daniel Craig, I would have written this film off completely. But now I'm tempted...thanks Steph...
Gordon is the new face of 'progressive' liberalism. He and his kind will only grown. Heck Greenwald is practically the reincarnation of Henry Ford and this is the Dearborn Independent right here.
Come and See.
I will likely check this out on netflix to catch Craig's performance, but I already know it will ring hollow compared to Elem Klimov's surreal Belorussian partisan/holocaust film.
as to all the comments about anti-semitism and plots by hollywood to sway public opinion, seriously? Thats what you have to say? Greenwald a modern day Henry Ford? You people need to put down the crack pipe.
Everytime I see the commercial for the movie I think of the defiant Palestinians and their struggle against fascist oppression and psychopathic monsters who want to exterminate them and take everything they have.
Funny, ain't it?
Remake the movie and set it in Gaza and I'll pay 12 bucks to see it.
We got better villians now than them lame ass Nazis.
Sure, ban him AND ban the zionist warloving arab hating trolls who are far worse than Gordon?
You wouldn't like that much, would you?
It's OK to spew hatred, racism and vile steroetypes at some people but not others, right?
Besides, that post is not an unreasonable or hateful comment. Save the rancor for when he does step over that line and put up with the rest as everyone else does here for equally divisive and stupid words from poorly domesticated apes like all of us.
Apes are better than people for hurling excrement at one's opponents is both effective and far less damaging than what people do.
/ducks and climbs tree
Could you put on a hat?
You irrighteous indignation and race-baiting is blindlingly bright and I left my shades at home.
This must be what a migraine feels like.
You are positively seering.
How arch.
I prefer my Nazis in zombie form:
http://www.deadsnow.com
You guys are all just a bunch of trolls riding your current anti-Israel or pro-Israel hobbyhorses, which has nothing to do w/the film itself....
The only good Nazi, is a dead Nazi, but dead zombie Nazis are even better.
CLICHE!
The movie industry has rendered the Holocaust into a "Fark Cliche" - anything for a buck.
Don't blame Salon readers, blame Hollywood.
Zacharek says "this otherwise methodical Holocaust movie" - so is she a raging frothing rabid anti-semite for stating the obvious?
I am sure it is a swell popcorn movie - so was TDTESS 2 and I want my money back.
You know why TDTESS 2 sucked so bad? They had to gut the movie of it's antiwar message because that comes across as being anti-Israeli/American terror war and 20th Century Fox will have none of that because WAR is our most important franchise.
Besides, it's just another propaganda film - yawn.
