"Zack and Miri Make a Porno"

There's no shortage of crude humor and nudity here, but Kevin Smith's freewheeling comedy is more concerned with romance than sex.

The letters thread is now closed.

John Waters could probably pull this off...

Give it to Kevin Smith and your back to watching people stuck in an overgrown state of assholesence.

Title

Someone at the studio already chickened out on this one. TV trailers are calling it "Zack and Miri" - no mention of porno.

That's because...

Someone at the studio already chickened out on this one. TV trailers are calling it "Zack and Miri" - no mention of porno.

...television stations were refusing to air the ad unless the title was cut. I guess they were afraid of complaints from the parents of little kids asking "Mommy, what's a 'porno'?"

Friday, October 31, 2008 07:14 AM

glad they cut the title...

I have a kid who's eight. I'd prefer not to have to explain what a "porno" is until he's, oh I dunno, twelve. since the posters are all over town, I probably won't have that luxury.

the whole "schlumpy unsuccessful dude has sex with beautiful girl while tossing (!) out shit and cum jokes" genre seems kind of yuck. hopefully it will blow over (!) shortly.

Daddy, what's a porno?

The average age for first exposure to porn is 11, so your kids won't be asking you what it is soon enough; they will know all about it. And now they have even more social reinforcement saying it's a fun, easy, way to make some extra cash.

"The average age for first exposure to porn is 11"

Just curious---were did THIS statistic come from?

What else is new?

I like Kevin Smith

I think he makes the best buddy movies, ever, and there's a sweet, wistful quality to his depiction of romance. I don't get why the foul humor bothers people. It's interesting, because they obviously aren't offended. They almost seem offended that they aren't offended, that the jokes aren't an assault, they're merely sophomoric and silly. What's wrong with being sophomoric and silly, now and then? There's a place in cinema for The Earrings of Madame De... and there's a place for Mallrats.

I particularly like that he shows flawed men. You really aren't allowed to do this in American movies, much. Certainly not with the heroes. In comedies, the leading man can be childish, they can be incompetent, but he absolutely has to be loveable. And in dramas he has to be stalwart and impervious to pain. Smith shows men who are weak, who have dislikable characteristics, who hurt people they love and hurt themselves, usually because they refuse to acknowledge their own failures and move past them. And he asks us to accept them, to like them, to feel for them, in spite of their faults. He even asks us to see ourselves in them. I think maybe that gets under people's skin more than the toilet jokes.

Friday, October 31, 2008 03:19 PM

nope. it's the toilet jokes.

flawed guys are fine, although it's interesting if the flaw is more than just being a 20-something dumbass.

the toilet and sex jokes, um, suck because they are easy, dumb and, yes, offensive.

being funny without being crass is hard. I like it when people try that and manage it. the converse - making a movie which goes: intro scene, poop joke, scene with hot chick looking hot, masturbation joke, scene with dudes being idiots, poop joke, one hour passes, really disgusting "joke" that "pushes the limits" and distinguishes this effort from all other movies like it, hot chick digs schlumpy looser, the end - is lazy.

there. I got so worked up, I spent five minutes on the topic...

Funny thing is...

Kevin Smith is a 20 something dumbass goin' on 40.

I saw the movie today

I felt like the plot did not make intuitive sense. I realize that many hollywood movies have plot holes or characters who act in illogical ways. But this movie was really beyond that.

Why would the supporting cast of the movie care so much and be so grateful to be involved with Zack and Miri's project that they are getting their utilities turned back on? Most people would really want to be paid to be in a porno movie.

Why do Zack and Miri think that this project is somehow a big worthwhile thing to do with their lives beyond just making money?

If the two of them are working the same jobs for such a long time, why would they be unable to pay their utility bills? Their budget hasn't changed.

Does the fire they are burning in their living room not cause the apartment to fill up with smoke?

These are just some of the many plot holes this movie is filled with. It just makes very little sense.

Kevin Smith Is a Sharp Writer Whose Concepts Can Occasionally

transcend his blah directorial style. I consider his finest work to be DOGMA, where he hit all THE DA VINCI CODE's points several years before that book came out, and added ideas about faith versus religion, vengeance and forgiveness...and even managed to toss in a coprological demon, and Jay & Silent Bob into the mix! Most of the time, though, he really needs to find a better director than himself - or maybe he should actually read that DIRECTING FOR DUMMIES book he suspects Ben Affleck sent him so many years ago...

Sure..

Smith is as sharp as his sensational "shitshot."

His shit is - old.
