"The Diving Bell and the Butterfly"

This imaginative, sensual picture is keyed to the indescribable essence of life: It's what movies, at their best, can be.

Johnny Got His Gun

If you like this film, you'll love, "Johnny Got His Gun," circa 1971. This film, written and directed by Dalton Trumbo (blacklisted in the 1950s) is shot largely from the point of view of a U.S. solder rendered quadriplegic and mute by battle in WW I. Extraordinary film

A good review

I can't wait to see it... providing it comes to my little corner of the world. It doesn't exactly sound like cineplex material.

Mathieu Amalric

Mathieu Amalric is one of the best actors in the world, full stop. I hope his performance in Spielberg's "Munich" and now this help him get the recognition he deserves in the English-speaking world.

Beautifully written

What a wonderful piece of criticism, Ms. Zacharek. That last line is a killer and I will be seeing this movie. Thank you.

A deeply moving review.

I had read praise for this movie before, but your words made this movie become essential viewing. A wonderful piece.

Mathieu Amalric is astounding

Kings and Queen is a film that literally shocked me. Particularly the father's cold, angry letter to his daughter, which I found to be devestating and unexpected (if you've seen it you'll understand, if not, rent this film). But the part that I thought about the most is the talk between Amalric's Ismael and his son Elias at the end - it moved me to tears. And Amalric's performance. I've been a fan since, and I can't wait to see this film.
