How can this be a good movie?
First I would have to buy the premise that an unplanned pregnancy with a stranger is FUNNY. The trailers depict this as a sort of "gotcha" on the guy--"oh hahaha, you have to be a parent now! Even though you're a dope and you don't know this woman!" Eesh.
Did you ever notice that TV and movie characters opt for abortion far less often than real people do?

Questioning the plausibility of a movie's premise.
How can this be a good movie? A 40-year-old virgin? How is this possible?

Reviews
I saw previews for this in the theater a few weeks ago & decided I'd pass on it, but this review has changed my mind. Thanks (I hope).

It's a Great Movie
I saw the movie and embarrassed myself at how loud I was laughing. The beautiful woman / slobby guy thing is dealt with honestly. That is, the makers of the movie don't pretend that it's normal. Her one -night attraction to him at the bar is explained by how kind and funny he is, and later they are pretty brutal about his looks.Usually movies pair actresses like Heigl with Harrison Ford and we're supposed to buy it.
I don't think the abortion option was glossed over, but it wasn't dwelt on. I thought we were supposed to infer from the fact that Heigl starts sobbing when she sees the ultrasound that she has decided to go ahead with the pregnancy.
This movie had even more heart than 40 Year Old Virgin did. I love this new genre of poignant vulgar movies! The scene where the sister rants and screams at the black bouncer (the warehouse manager from The Office) and then suddenly he pulls her aside and says he understands- first I cringed and then I was practically crying. I NEVER cry in movies. Anyway- go see it. And stay for the credits- they show baby pictures of the cast and crew.

The Movie could be good..
but this is absolutely true and its truth is not even remotely debatable.
"For decades, popular entertainment has refused to acknowledge that something like 1 in 4 pregnancies in this country ends in abortion. Movies and TV dish out lots of unplanned pregnancies, but almost never does the heroine choose to terminate one of them (and even then, not without some form of punishment)."
Of course, in this movie it seems the abortion option would kill the tone of the movie so it's no biggie. Other than on a date, I doubt I'll see the movie, though the review here was good.

In the words of my 3-year-old, "Huh?"
What an odd piece of writing. How, exactly, does one "fetishize either the ability to conceive or the significance of our place in the universe once we've done so"? Time-released capsules of mood? Holiday, The Lady Eve, the Palm Beach Story: are these supposed to be movies? That we've heard of? A half-assed baby step? I really wanted to read a review of this movie, but just couldn't get past the words.

I hope someone's going to review Day Watch
I just saw it last night. It's got some interesting homoerotic and transgender scenes. I hope someone reviews it for Salon. I'd like to read what other people think of this film.

thanks epizia
which reminds me of episiotomy. You make some good points. I'll see this movie because even if it's stupid it's still funny which is the whole point anyway. There is a movie with a similar plot to this one from about 45 years ago which starred Steve McQueen and Natalie Wood. If you want to see this subject treated seriously back when people really could find themselves in this situation without options, watch this movie. It's not at all entertaining.

If current educational and social trends continue this movie may be illustrating the only options other than going it alone
that women will have. Maybe it's good to start getting used to the idea.

Re: Where do I even start?
I couldn't have said it better myself! First, I am so sick of irresponsible women getting pregnant. Where is the pill? Where are the condoms? What happened to safe sex? WHERE IS YOUR BRAIN??? And second, nobody that looks like Katherine Heigl is going to have a one night stand with a loser that looks like Seth Rogen (sorry, Seth, but even you know it's not like that in real life). I don't care if the movie is hilarious. I won't be watching it. Oh, BTW, I didn't read the review either.

Skin shots
They're working on -- although "inching toward" might be the better term -- a Web site that will inform users how far they have to wade into a specific movie to get to the naked girlie parts.
Uh.... This website already exists. Mr. Skin, anybody? He already has his own book in bookstores.
There is also another website, I couldn't find the name, which provides free pics of a wide variety of actresses and starlets' nude and no-nude scenes; though you have to actually subscribe to see the vids. Very useful!
I haven't seen the film yet. Apparently though, it's not supposed to be a joke that his project has already been thought of by somebody else.
Truffaut said that he was only interested in films that show the joy of making cinema or the agony of it. What I dislike about Judd Appatow is that he shows neither. He is one of the very worst visual filmmakers working today. But I do find it particularly repugnant that he knows or cares so little about his film's key demographic that he couldn't be bothered to research if this kind of website is already available.

classics
Holiday, The Lady Eve, the Palm Beach Story: are these supposed to be movies? That we've heard of?
Oh, my, you really don't know what you are missing, do you? Rent The Palm Beach Story post-haste. It is hysterically funny, and Claudette Colbert makes Katherine Heigl look like a dishrag.

Questioning the plausibility ? maybe you just don't know enough different people

I know a 40 yr old virgin (well, he's 36 so its close enough). He's successful, wealthy, well traveled, not fat, ugly, or a closeted gay. He just doesn't know how to close the deal (not unlike Steve Carrel's character).
I also know a smart, college educated, career-minded 26 year old woman who decided to have her out of wedlock child. Part of her decision against abortion was looking at 2 of her successful friends whose successful mothers both had them out of wedlock after college.
There are the oddities out there, if these should be considered oddities.
