What acting is all about
Ms. Zacharek makes the cardinally stupid mistake of assuming Jane Fonda's real life persona is the same as her character in the movie...ah, Stephanie, it's called acting...ever heard of it? I think Ms. Fonda has quite a bit of experience at adopting roles...why do people make the fundamental mistake of assuming a character is the same as the real person?

stupid review
This is a seriously stupid review. After all I watch David Letterman and larry king so I am properly informed ;-p

What do teenage abuse victims wear?
Something mentioned in this review screams out at me. I'm not a psychologist or sociologist, but I wonder if one of the screenwriter's premises about the Lohan character as a victim of incest comes even close to reality. Is it common for a victimized young woman choose to flaunt her sexiness and wear ultra-revealing clothing? Might she not choose to hide her body? Might she want to deflect male attention? I COULD BE WRONG. But I wonder if this is a case of a writer and director making up what they portray about the psyche of a female victim, and this justifies featuring a peep show for an actress who has a history of innapropriate behavior? This could be a totally false protrait of how a real, traumatized young women might act. Which would make the movie really icky, IMHO.

Hrm?
Since when do an anorexic, drug-addicted starlet's antics need "shedding light" on? Seriously, how hard can it be to figure out why she's like that? Presuming one cared.

How is she talented?
All through LiLo's staggering, slurring, vomiting, coke snorting, vodka swilling, lying, car wrecking, wreck of a life, people have been saying, "its a shame, because she's so talented..."
Since when? What has she ever been in where she is so good? The Parent Trap? Freaky Friday? Just my Luck? Herbie? Mean Girls was fun because of Rachel McAdams. In Prarie Home Companion LiLo was the energy hole where the life drained out whenever she was on screen. She's a one note, dim bulb of a screen presence who offers nothing. She's about the equivalent of Jill Whelan, whining to Julie McCoy on the Lido Deck that her father doesn't understand about her feminine hygiene needs.
Why do people keep saying she's talented? She's a boring actress, and a boring, gross, spotted, D-list celebrity, and nobody wants to see her in anything. Please help make her go away by discontinuing the "emperor has no clothes" mentality that keeps you dumbly repeating, "she's talented, she's talented, she's talented."

Comment
I just wanted to point out that Lindsay L. was known for her partying, drinking, etc long before she made this movie. To somehow make the connection of the movie script and her out of control behavior is silly. Just look at the people she has surrounded herself with (Paris H, Nicole R) and that is all the explanation you need.

teenage abuse victims
actually, abuse victims can go either way. a girl (or boy) who has been abused could become very puritanical about sex (for the reasons you stated) -- or become hypersexual (in this case, the theory is that the child begins to relate sexual attention with validation). of course, it's a continuum, but you get the idea.
just an fyi
(and on a personal note, the people that i have known who were victims of sexual abuse seemed to fall closer to the latter end of the spectrum, don't know if that's an mtv, hypersexed generational thing. but that's another topic.)

Dear Lord, dan cullinane
I would have to disagree with you about Lindsay Lohan. To say she's untalented is a gross overstatement. Granted, she's not the best actress on the planet, but she does have some sort of charisma on screen. I thought she was great in Mean Girls and in Freaky Friday, for instance. I never saw the Herbie movie.
I think she could stand to take some acting classes, do some theater, take a supporting role in an indie. Maybe go to college. The talent she had as a child that got her acting roles needs to be nurtured. When I was a kid, everyone made such a big deal about what a talented writer I was. I was precocious. But as an adult, my writing is generic at best. I think it's the same thing for Lohan. Acting is hard work. You can't focus on it if you're out getting drunk every night or taking drugs.
Unforuntaly, But she'll never get the chance to work on her acting because she's the meal ticket for so many people. I mean, look at her mother and father! Is it any wonder she acts the way that she does!

Boy, this movie sounds awful
I had no intention of ever seeing this typical Hollywood drivel, however I read the review hoping to see Stephanie rip it to shreds. I think she was being too kind:) As for Lohan...well, I come from Long Island and I can attest to the fact that most Long Island young women act exactly like her...shallow, over-sexed, obnoxious, twits.

jane Got it Wrong
From the few clips I've seen, I can tell you what this movie get wrong. it has Jane Fonda as a Mormon grandmother (according to Fonda), and I immeidately noticed that the tone she used with Rachel was highly inapporpriate. Fonda was plain, grumpy and rude to Rachel, and refers several times to physcial discipline.
I am a Mormon mother of 7 children, and we are taught repeatedly to treat our children, even when they misbehave, with dignity and respect, while holding them accountable for their actions. Their formative personalities will be influenced far more by love, caring, and respect shown by the parent or grandparents, than threats or harsh punsihments.
I['ve also notice that as people become elderly in the Mormon church - they become sweeter and kinder - not crotchety. It come from a lifetime of healthy clean living, doing service for others, and looking on the bright side.
i wish Jane Fonda would have, could have interviewed Mormon grandmothers and discovered the most powerful change agent in the world - love. Not harshness, not condemnation.
I've posted an online link to a site of FREE lessons on building a loving family.
