"Brokeback Mountain"

Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger play two cowboys in love in this mainstream movie that is not nearly as brave as it might have been.

Can't see the forest for the trees...

It's a shame for Ms. Zacharek that her work as a critic has made it so difficult for her to see the forest for the trees. I read her review both before and after seeing the movie and it remains in my opinion, one of her poorest. Why? Because she knit-picks and then eventually sucks the marrow right out of Brokeback Mountain's bones.

There's no need to fillet this film that far. It doesn't need it. She's made it way too complicated. She pulled out a microscope when a pair of open eyes in a darkened theatre would have sufficed.

Regardless of Ms. Zacharek's review, Brokeback Mountain will be deeply affecting for some and easy to dismiss for others because everybody will be seeing it through their own filters. In this case I don't think it much matters what Ms. Zacharek has written because Brokeback Mountain has strong legs and a big heart that don't require her kind of microscopic inspection to appreciate and understand.
