While I don't disagree with most of the points she makes in the review, and did in fact enjoy some aspects of "Legend of Zorro" when I saw a sneak preview two weeks ago, Ms Zacharek does leave out one fact that some potential viewers may find significant:
The actual plot, as opposed to the character interactions and the action scenes, is deeply, deeply stupid. I don't mean "mindlessly entertaining," I mean "appallingly moronic," so contrary to fact and reason as to hang your suspension of disbelief by the neck until dead, then draw and quarter it, *then* burn it.
I won't go into real spoilers, but I will say this: even if I could forgive the writers for being a bit iffy on their history (hint: a Confederate Army officer in 1850 is a trifle out of place), you'd think that anyone with a basic grasp of geography would realize that, of all the possible places to carry out the Evil Plan, California doesn't even make the list. What's wrong with, say, Georgia, or at least somewhere on the Atlantic?
I loved this movie from beginning to end. It is lighter than Mask of Zorro - there's no head in a jar - which is just fine with me. Stephanie Zacharek, unlike most critcs, has not forgotten why most of us go to the movies in the first place - to have a good time.
I love movies and usually see 2-3 per week and see all sorts, domestic, foreign, comedy, drama. But there is a place for a movie that just lets you have a good time.
