"Elizabethtown" is all about estrangement: son from father, girl from boy.Society from the individual. The lead characters are swept along by the overpowering currents of estrangement not knowing how to emerge from its numbing waters. They think of themselves as substitutes, stand-ins for another's life and another's human interactions. They think, "I'll play my part, say the right lines, present the right facial expressions in this drama but at heart it's not really about me.Thus most of the picture is about the girl and boy who play their parts but can't commit to each other because it's all a play written by an unknown author and they don't know how it ends so they can't end it happily. The conclusion suggests a resolution, but five minutes after we leave them as we walk out of the theatre they are leaving each other.
