Maybe it's just me, or my computer, but this story's all messed up.

Ad covering intro text, interview text not there, etc.

I guess I'll check back latah! I do love John Turturro, though, so I hope you can fix this!

It's not just you!

He's one of my favorite actors; I hope this is corrected soon.

Salon: Please don't leave us hanging

I have the same problem. The story ends abruptly just as the interview is supposed to get started. Talk about a low blow! I'm a big Turturro fan and would love to read the full article. Help please.

This is a podcast.

According to the headline, this is a podcast interview. I'm lucky in that I have the technology to listen to it. However, for those subscribers who don't have the ability to listen to it, it would be nice if Salon would transcribe the interview so that they may read it if they choose to.

Podcast, schmodcast.

Even though I DID miss this rather buried bit of news, just transcribe the damn thing, please.

"Podcast" is just a recorded convo or other sound one might want to convey or even force upon an unsuspecting world's ears, right? WTF. Forgive me, but I'm just not sharing the thrall that seems to be the thrall that is "Podcast." Plus, if I'm not mistaken, listening necessarily includes sound, and, sometimes, sound = noise.

I read really, really fast - much faster than I listen. Please give me that option. Although I'm sure it's really charming to HEAr John Turturro (and Andrew O'Hehir, dont' get me wrong) do this interview, if you could give us the option to READ this interview instead of listen, I would most grateful.

Unless, of course, it has something to do with page hits or advertisers; god forbid I would do anything in opposition to your goals in that department.

Thank you for this kind consideration of this matter.

Expanding/invasive advertising

It's damned annoying. I pay a subscription to Salon, so I'm assuming these ads are only worse for nonsubscribers. I find the ads that expand on mouseover annoying. I find the ads that cover text with no way of closing or minimizing them REALLY annoying. Surely there's some other way of selling your advertisers space than covering up the text. Burying the link for the mp3 of the podcast under that ad doesn't help, either.

Wow!

Did anyone know that The Graduate will be out on DVD on September 11?

Just WOW!!

Friday, September 7, 2007 11:51 AM

How could I NOT notice! (ads are everywhere.)

But! Did YOU notice that they've "updated" the lovely Anne Bancroft's legs from gartered stockings to those thoroughly modern (and femoral artery occluding) "thigh highs"???

I mean, what is up with THAT????? So, like, garters are off the list of CFM-wear??

=P

Another vote for transcribing the podcast

Like other posters have mentioned, I can read faster than people generally talk, in addition to being able to read while watching light TV, listening to music, or talking on the phone. I also prefer having the option of skimming an interview to see what is discussed, so I can choose to skip over anything that's not as interesting to me, or reread parts of it effortlessly.

Because of all this, listening to a podcast is very time-consuming. It's slow, I can't multitask, and I have to listen attentively to the whole thing so I don't miss anything that might be of interest.

Unless you find reading especially mentally taxing or you're particularly interested in hearing John Turturro's voice, this format is nothing but an inconvenience.

I think I've twigged to what's goin on here.

I think it's the accursed "Joan Walsh Syndrome" whereby these folks REALLY would rather be talking heads than print journos. I think they're putting this interview in this format so that Andrew O'Hehir can get some practice and maybe some exposure and pretend he's being one of those on-air movie guys and get him some a that sparkly cachet instead of being just some in-print movie guy laboring in wretched alt-media obscurity.

I mean, where's the big deal with John Turturro's voice, anyway? Why can't we just read it?

Don't get me wrong; like i said, I love John Turturro and am really looking forward to this movie. I'd really like to read this interview. I'm no Luddite and can actually play the Podcast, but I don't like Podcasts. They're kinda dumb, to me. I suppose you could say that, in the time I've typed all these letters (although I type really fast, too) I could have listened to the dang Podcast.

I'd still rather read it. Je me hausse les epaules.

Agreed

In the past, any interview I've cared to read has been at least partially transcribed. Why not this one? I've always thought the transcribed articles on Salon are just a lazy version of an article about an interview, but this is even worse.

It's like I've just sat down on the weekend to read my favorite magazine and found out that to read one of the articles I need to wait five minutes for the words to appear on the page, then hand it to my husband so he can read the words out loud for me. Boring. Guess I'll just skip it.

Original...hardly

I take issue with the notion of originality with Turturro's "Romance & Cigarettes." For one, it is a lovely production, but hardly an original one. The concepts of combining popular music with drama and video Turturro used have been tried and tested by Julie Anne Robinson in 2004, with UK release of "Viva Blackpool" featuring David Morrissey (one of the reasons for his sudden popularity). And one may even argue that the glossier version of this type of musical filmmaking has been done years before that, with Luhrmann's over-produced Moulin Rouge! (2001).

Turturro is a genious actor and a promising filmmaker, but in this case, I cannot quietly accept the idea that this type of filmmaking is an "original concept." Our UK media counterparts are far more adventurous when it comes to making film and tv content. They should continuously receive our attention and get the credit they're overdue.
