I saw Tony Manero in Paris a few months ago and, to be honest, I would have been mildly happy with the Full Monty-style feelgood fest I was expecting. That it wasn't was an unexpected bonus. A wonderfully mean and cynical skewering of lifestyle/consumerist aspirations while people are being tortured and disappeared all around. The anti-Americanism of the film is moot; the target is more those Pinochet cheerleaders who shrugged off despicable human-rights abuses in the name of their own economic prosperity. When Pinochet was under house arrest in London in 1999, pending his extradition to Spain to face justice (which never came about), his supporters could offer little better in his defence than 'before Pinochet you couldn't even buy blue jeans in Chile.' Tony Manero is a fan after their heart...
...America WAS responsible for what happened to Chile in the 70s. Don't believe me? Google the following:
Chile Pinochet coup CIA 1973
Better yet, try throwing Kissinger's name in there. You know Kissiner, right? The former Secretary of State who can no longer travel to Europe?? Thought so.
It's not in English and it blames America.
