I'm not a big Fellini fan, but "Amarcord" is one of my favorite movies. I am particularly fond of the entire section where the family takes the crazy uncle out to the country. I laughed 'til it hurt. The crazy uncle ends up in a tree, throwing rocks at everyone, yelling "I want a woman!" The sequence concludes with the father, who had previously gotten into trouble for playing "The Internationale", saying something like "We all go crazy sometimes."
Fellini was humorously commenting on Italy during the fascist years. Boy, as an American living through the past eight years I can relate, and laugh.
Fantastic film. Fellini's genius was to capture the upheavals of his youth and impart that emotional essence onto film in an incredibly compelling, quintessentially Italian, and extremely hilarious manner (as referenced by the subject of this post).
Fine film
Go getter
But Bertolucci's "1900"
Was many miles better...
I saw Amarcord for the first time while in college in 1975. It was a warm late summer night and coming out of the theater felt like walking into the atmosphere of the movie- and that's still the feeling get when I think about it.
I first saw "Amaracord" in 1974 when I was starting a career as a high school teacher of mathematics. Highly instructive about the real lives of teenage boys . . .
I have treasured this movie for years and am happy to see it rediscovered and appreciated.
Sexism on the other hand is evil. I'm glad we're on the same page.
I'm glad to see that one of my all time favorite films is getting the deluxe DVD treatment it deserves. Seeing it was one of the biggest artistic experiences I've ever had, and I can't wait to see it again.
...where Tarantino got the name "Bruno Scagnetti" for "Reservoir Dogs" and "Natural Born Killers." Clever.
The scene where the villagers go out in their boats to see the Queen Mary pass by is one of my favorites. Visually and emotionally it was pitch perfect.
Tarantino is quite the clever turd.
