Can't really argue with most of the nominations, but I do wish that Richard Gere's performance in "The Hoax" would have gotten a nod.
But, hey, "Persepolis" DID get nominated for Best Animated Film!
I'm sorry about Satrapi. She really is a genius. Persepolis vs. Ratatouille? Come on.
But Michalkov, Bodrov and Wadja -- nothing to complain about there.
I'm glad they're all still making films! Hooray for their longevity.
That's not necessarily what they "think" at all. The lack of Oscar nominations does not equal "crappiness."
Not that I would have gone to see any of those mega-earners. But hyperbole has a way of lowering one's credibility.
The fact that the brilliant "Into the Wild" was NOT nominated for best picture indicates that the "academy awards" are a complete farce. I will never again watch, follow, listen to, or talk about the "academy awards" again.
How did Ryan Gosling not get nominated for making one of the most preposterous of scenarios a most gentle and heart warming experience? So many critics spent so much time suggesting that the translation of the script to the screen would be impossible. The challenge was met. It worked. Many a sniffle in the theater was heard. When did skillful acting become declasse?
Maybe the nomination of Ruby Dee for "American Gangster" is actually a "guilt trip" by the Academy for ignoring her and her late husband Ossie Davis all these years...and this is a way of belatedly honoring both of them? Dee/Davis were a "class act" in the Tracy/Hepburn and Tandy/Cronin tradition; too bad it took the Academy so long to recognize this.
Yes, I think that is the answer. Otherwise, Kelly Macdonald should have been nominated for her performance in No Country --she more than held her own among the performances of the men in that film.
As one of maybe 139 people in America who saw "In the Valley of Elah" in theatrical release, I was stunned and thrilled to see Tommy Lee Jones' extraordinary work in that film recognized with a Best Actor nomination. In my view his work in Elah is far better in range, subtlety, expression of emotion and credibility than the far more limiting character he has in No Country.
This is a beautiful, powerful and important film. If the final two scenes don't break your heart, your name is probably Douglas Feith.
Norbit was nominated for Best Makeup. Are you %$^%ing kidding me? How can a racist, sexist, steaming pile of garbageg like that be considered even a consideration for any award other than a Razzie.
