Michael Jackson's life in video

A brilliant career, from his 1968 Motown audition at the age of 9 to his epic videos of the 1980s and beyond

Michael was robbed.

Roak With You and Billie Jean are two of the all time greatest of this genre.

Rock With You is a really sad song.

Did anyone else look at that and Billie Jean and just want to tell him to stop right there?

I'd watch his eyes while he was singing in his various vids and not see happiness and/or joy.

I truly don't believe he felt any.

I believe he was an extremely sad and lonely little boy.

I guess it all just had to go down the way it went down.

We have no control over so much, no matter what it is.

I don't look at him as a "freak" and/or the way too many others do.

Maybe because my father was a prick.

Maybe I understand some of what was killing him inside.

Maybe that is some of what made me a hardassed guy at too many times in my own life.

Maybe~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Damn it, this isn't such fun.

1983 and I was stunned

Don't know why I tuned into the Motown anniversary special. As I recall, it was a standard tribute show, kinda dull, and the old Motown stars looked...old.

Then Michael came out and did "Billy Jean" and I was stunned. It was like nothing I'd ever seen before. A reinvention of pop and dance and stage persona, and absolutely riveting.

One of a kind. Forever.

a tortured artist

the pantheon of tortured artists adds one --- maybe there he'll be understood.

Thank You!

This is how I want to remember Michael -- an amazing, prodigal, musical talent. He was my first crush in the fifth grade and I sang Ben with my grade school chorus. Thank you, again.

The Sweet Boy with the Peanut Butter Cup Nose

For me, Michael will always be that sweet young boy with the soulful eyes and a voice beyond his years. When I heard he was dead my first thought was, 'he's out of his misery now'.

Thank for this collection!

Coolness and awesomeness. I could listen to "Rock with you" for hours. It was one the first and one of the best R&B songs I have heard to this day. That along with "Billie Jean" too. I'll remember Michael for his songs most of all. R.I.P King of Pop

Thank you

Thank you, Michael, for sharing your brilliance with us for all those years, and thank you, Salon, for this.

"Off the Wall" might be the greatest pop music album ever made

And I say this as someone who listens too all kinds of music.

A nice idea for a Web page, Salon - just put videos up and enjoy. Everybody knows about the weird, seedy personal life. I will gladly separate the person from the art for a little while to appreciate the talent.

He'll live on

Say what you will about the man, but he had talent. He was 1 of the 4 pop/rock acts in the 80's who put MTV on the map.

To this day I have yet to see a music video as produced and good has his Thriller vids. They were ground-breaking and fantastic.

I know he hasn't done much in the last 10 years 'cept make appearances in various courts. And I know he was broke. But he was Michael Jackson! One of the greatest American pop artist.

I probably won't miss the man MJ. I mean, I don't care, I didn't know him personally. But I will miss his voice, his music, his dancing and his uniqueness. And most of all, I'll miss whatever he had in store for us in the future.

Happy trails Michael.

And thanks for the memories, especially that live performance of Smooth Criminal.

A Cautionary Tale

People, don't let your children grow up to be pop stars. Poor Michael--from that beautiful, talented little boy to the wreck he became at his death. Obviously, no one was watching this kid; he was thrown to the sharks and hence the weirdness, descent and early death. In the end, no amount of fame or fortune could replace whatever was missing from his childhood.

Thank You

I thought it was really graceful of you to end the montage with a look back at the young MJ and "Never Can Say Goodbye". Following the (d)evolution of his career through the course of the preceding videos, it was a nice reminder of how fresh and amazing his musical talent was.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm gonna miss that guy, the world is a bit poorer for his absence.

So soulful...

'Rock with you' has got to be one of the most soulful songs ever written.

Genius.
