Born to runway

This season's "Project Runway" hopefuls show off their collections -- pastel plaid! flashes of breast! -- at New York Fashion Week.

The letters thread is now closed.

IMHO, Salon has long had a fairly passive-aggressive relationship with it's readers ...

I used to be a subscriber -- hah! -- I learned several years ago that they "never give an inch" ... be it Paglia or Steffie or Broadsheet -- including in their day -- Waldman and Dickerson and others ...

It's amazing the problems that arise from lack of editorial oversight ... IMHO, Waldman and Dickerson were salvageable. Paglia's last two pieces have been more "coherent' and focused than the self-indulgent drivel she's been peddling (I still don't like her much, but at least I don't feel pangs of "enabling" to even read her.)

Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy -- see the gossip blog that the War Room has descended to ... why yes, it's SEVENTEEN and SASSY reborn as "politics" ... blech.

Too bad HuffPo is such a crazy-quilt of unreliable narrators.

What is seen...

...can not be unseen.

For the final time, for those who still don't understand the complaints: photos of the final collections are Project Runway spoilers. Period. Clearly, I am not alone in believing this, as other comments show. I understand the whole decoy designer thing and realize that Kenley was going to show whether she's an official finalist or not - but I (and many other PR fans) don't want to see any collection until the finale is broadcast.

A lot of TV critics see TV episodes and even season finales before they're aired publicly. But do critics wantonly spoil something like the season finale of a show like "Lost"? No - if only to avoid enraging readers. Why should this be any different?

As soon as I saw the first photo, I scrolled down the page to try to avoid it - Only to stumble on a second, clearer PR spoiler photo image on Video Dog. Which, despite complaints, is still on the front page as I write this.

What it comes down to is trust; I can no longer trust Salon not to ruin things like this, which means I'll be visiting the site far less. That's the only "intelligent" thing to do, especially since voicing my concerns to Salon has obviously failed to persuade them of the error of their ways.

@ marquisem

By seeing Kenley in the photo associated with the Salon article, you have learned that Kenley is one of the top six finalists.

If you watched last week's show, you would have learned that Kenley is one of the top six finalists.

What is being spoiled?

Please avoid the appearance of spoilers....

I'm finally caught up on all my Project Runway watching and yes, I know that Kenley is still on. Even so, I don't want to see her on the front page of ANYTHING during Fashion Week. The reason I watch is for the surprise. I don't try to figure out who are decoys. I'm sure this marks me as totally naive, but I watch 'em as they come.

I'm baffled

What is being spoiled? I can't believe there are so many posters here who do not understand how this works.

As numerous others have already pointed out, there are no spoilers here. After last week's show, there were six contestants left, and all six of those contestants participated in fashion week. What is being spoiled?

And after having that explained several times in this letters thread, you're still complaining?

REAL breasts or cantaloupes?

Haven't we all had it up to here with bra ads and fashion models sporting two cantaloupes attached to the chest? Implants are SO obvious and SO unattractive. How can a woman not notice how fake her store-bought breasts are?

If a woman wants breast implants, that is her choice, but to flaunt them at a public forum is beyond bad taste. And it is laughable.

And what is with that horse walk on the runway? Could we, uh, get back to natural do ya think?

"What part of this do you not understand?"

I understand the picture posted with article really didn't show very much, and you could have very easily just clicked off the page if you had an ounce of intelligence.

Sunday, September 14, 2008 07:13 AM

@ Saintzak

What part of this do you not understand?

The images that I'm supposed to "just not look at" were plastered across the front page of Salon the first day this article ran. I can avoid the Getty archives, etc. Does Salon want me to use my powers of ESP to avoid their front page as well?

Saturday, September 13, 2008 05:45 PM

What spolier"

Every season they've used the last eliminated designers as decoys at Bryant Park. The only season where it was obvious was season one. Austin Scarlet was asked to do a decoy collection two weeks before the show, and his collection was clearly not finished.

As far as seeing the final collection before the show airs, Getty iImages has photos posted on line instantly after the runway show. If you don't want to see, don't look.

NOT a spoiler

If you've ever seen the show before (which I assume you have, if you're up in arms about perceived spoilers), you would know that in every season ALL the designers who are still in the running as of the episode's airdate show at Fashion Week. Some are real contenders, some are decoys. There has been plenty written about this, and information about all the designers and the looks, including pictures, were posted all over the Internet.

If you'd been watching the season, you would know that Kenley is still in the running as of Friday. If you haven't been watching the season, do you really think it's reasonable to expect the rest of the world to go on complete PR lockdown to appease you since you can't keep up?

Please calm down.

Cat vs Roomba

"I know this is vitally important to Salon. But does the real world really watch this crap? I've never met anyone who admits to ever watching it."

CatvRoomba, you letter was boring and uninspired. We think that your invocation of "the real world" was derivative and stale, and the description of your friends left us cold. I'm sorry CatvRoomba. You're out.

@ Cricket

...and then you scroll down to Video Dog and see a pretty clear shot of several outfits from another collection.

This just proves that Salon doesn't get it. And if it's true, as others have said, that this happened last year (I don't recall), then it proves just how tone-deaf they are to the concerns of readers.

The downward slide of Salon continues...
