Even though only about two percent of all LWs on Salon actually give a real name, most of them adopt a handle and stick to it. Frequent readers develop a familiarity with LWs and can begin to ascribe a personality to people who sign their letters.
Anonymous, on the other hand, could be anybody. It's a devalued opinion because it is delivered without context, without personality.
So why should I, Anonymous get a star? I shouldn't. I should go jump off the garage roof, or stick my hand in the kitchen garbage disposal. But get a star? Fuggitaboddit.
